About this file
This is a Specifications document for a Traffic Control project issued by the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) as part of a Request for Proposal. The project involves providing, installing, and maintaining temporary traffic signals and associated work zone traffic control measures in Caldwell, Kansas, specifically between the South City Limits of Caldwell and the north side of Sixth Avenue. The contractor is responsible for supplying and maintaining temporary traffic signals, work zone signage, channelizers, temporary striping, rumble strips, and barricades as detailed in the bid item "Traffic Control Lump Sum." KDOT anticipates one traffic signal switch with an estimated project duration of 4 to 6 weeks. The specifications reference standard KDOT traffic control plan sheets (TE700 through TE795) and incorporate guidance from the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). All work must comply with KDOT's 2015 Standard Specifications and the special provisions outlined in the document.
The specifications establish comprehensive requirements for temporary traffic signal installation and maintenance, including detailed design standards for advance warning areas, transition tapers, activity zones, and termination areas based on posted speed limits. The contractor must ensure minimum lane widths of 11 feet and implement accessibility features for pedestrians and cyclists with disabilities, including audible devices and detectable barriers where pedestrian facilities are disrupted. Design speeds must be based on the posted legal speed of the roadway prior to work commencement, and all temporary traffic control equipment must be designed, installed, and maintained according to MUTCD standards. The document specifies the use of particular Standard Plan Sheets for different traffic control types, including configurations for temporary signals, lane closures, flaggers, pilot cars, and shoofly diversions. Rumble strips, channelizing devices, and sign specifications are detailed with precise measurements and placement requirements to ensure driver safety and adequate visibility throughout the work zone.
