-Requirement Sheet for Large 5 Axis Vertical CNC Mill-Turn Lathe-

NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) One Large 5 Axis Vertical Mill-Turn Lathe Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) Turning Center with a PC based control with program simulation graphics and 2 USB ports.

Specifications and requirements:

1.1 Shall be of new construction of a standard commercial product offered for sale.

1.2 Shall have an overall machine footprint no longer than 230 inches in length including the chip conveyor, shall be no wider than 200 inches wide including the operator display panel, and no taller than 220 inches high.

1.3 Shall be capable of machining in the X,Y,B,Z, and C Axes.

1.4 Shall be capable of 5-Axis simultaneous full contouring machining.

1.5 Shall have absolute position encoders which require no “zero return” or homing procedure.

Mill/Turning Center Capacities

2.1 Shall have over 58” of swing over the bed.

2.2 Shall have over 47 inches of max turning diameter.

2.3 Shall have over 59 inches of “Z” axis travel.

2.6 Shall have a Y axis total travel of 48 inches.

2.8 Shall have over 35 Tool automatic tool changer.

2.9 Shall utilize CAPTO-C8 tooling for turning rigidity

Main Spindle - Turning

3.1 Shall have main spindle power over 40 HP and over 4,400 lbs-ft of torque.

3.2 Shall have a maximum main spindle speed over 495 RPM and a minimum speed less than 5

RPM

Main Spindle - C-Rotary Axis

4.1 Shall permit 0 to 360 degree rotation full contouring capability coordinated with X,Y, and Z axis

4.2 Shall have a rotation increment of .001 of a degree when engaged as C axis.

4.3 Shall have a hydraulic disk brake capable of holding C axis still when heavy milling forces are present.

Milling Spindle

5.2 Shall have a maximum M-Spindle speed over 9,500 RPM.

5.3 Shall have a minimum M-Spindle speed under 50 RPM.

5.4 Shall allow Synchronized tapping.

Linear Y-Axis

6.1 Shall have a total “Y” axis travel over 48 inches in length minimum centered on Z axis.

Machine Axis Accuracy

7.2 Machines X axis accuracy shall be .0005” or better over 4” of travel anywhere in the range of movement of X axis

7.3 Machines Z axis accuracy shall be .0008” or better over 12” of travel anywhere in the range of movement of X axis

7.4 Machines X axis repeatability shall be +/- .0002 or better.

7.5 Machines Z axis repeatability shall be +/- .0002 or better.

7.6 Machines C axis Positioning accuracy shall be +/_ .015 of a degree in a 30 degree movement or better.

7.7 Machines C axis repeatability shall be +/- .007 of a degree or better.

7.8 Machine shall be equipped with a thermal growth compensation system to retain accuracy during temperature variance.

7.9 Shall have an Automatic Tool Touch setter.

7.11 Shall have the RenishawRMP60/CAPTO-C8 inspection probe with control software loaded.

Tooling/Spindle Type

8.1 For maximum turning rigidity the machine shall have a CAPTO C8 type spindle.

Safety

9.1 The machine control must have real time 3D simulation technology of actual machine process.

9.2 Travel limit switches shall be mounted on all linear axis travel ends to provide a positive end of travel limit.

9.3 A programmable soft limit capability shall be provided for all linear axis travel extents.

9.4 Operator access door shall be provided with a safety interlock that prevents automatic operation with the door open.

9.5 There shall be a total enclosure of the mill/turn lathe to shield the operator from coolant and chips.

9.6 There shall be a view port made of laminated safety glass in the access door.

9.7 Shall have a Visiport Rotary Wiper for visual clarity of the workpiece by the operator.

Waste Control

10.1 Shall have the Chip Conveyor.

10.2 Shall have a cleaning hose for the operator to spray down the inside of the machine enclosure.

CNC Control Specifications

11.1 The machines control shall have a PC based with multiple USB ports and touchscreen capability.

11.3 Shall have ball screw pitch error compensation on X, Y, and Z axis.

11.6 Shall have a 10 MB program capacity.

11.11 Shall have the capability to index the multiple cutting tip type turning and boring tools.

11.16 Shall have an MPG pendant for machine axis jogging

Axis Travel Speed Performance

12.1 The machines X Axis drive maximum rapid speed shall be at least 1,250 inches per minute.

12.2 The machines Y Axis drive maximum rapid speed shall be at least 1,250 inches per minute.

12.3 The machines Z Axis drive maximum rapid speed shall be at least 1,250 inches per minute.

12.4 The machines C Axis drive maximum rapid speed shall be at least 20 RPM.

Programmer/Operator Training

13.1 Vender shall provide 5 days of Programmer/Operator training on-site at the machine.

13.2 Machine shall come with operation and maintenance manuals in book and/or CD format.

Additional Specifications

14.1 Shall come with the foundation bolts.

Warranty

15.1 The machine must include a minimum of a two years parts and one year labor warranty.
