Specifications Variable Intensity Hybrid Tillage Implement with Seeding Capacity
GENERAL INFORMATION
1.0 Scope of Work:
Provide a vertical tillage implement with seedling attachment for use at the North Central Soil Conservation Research Unit’s Swan Lake Research Farm.
2.0 Background:
Vertical tillage is increasing in popularity because it allows farmers to size residue to hasten decomposition, maintain a high percentage of residue on the surface to protect the soil from erosion, and facilitate better planting conditions for row crops. When coupled with an air-seeder, a vertical tillage implement can be an effective tool for planting small-seeded crops like pennycress. Obtaining a 10 foot wide hybrid tillage implement with a seeder attachment will allow us to match commercial recommendations for seeding pennycress (air seeder attached to vertical tillage implement) in small plot research and compare it to seeding with a drill (current research standard). A vertical tillage implement will also provide an additional tool for experimenting with crop residue management in contrast with more conventional tillage systems to reduce erosion and improve soil health.
