About this file
This document outlines requirements for a federal contract to add fluorescent microscopy capabilities to an existing Leica M165C microscope. The Agricultural Research Service within the Department of Agriculture seeks to procure a CoolLED pE300 lite fluorescent light source capable of holding three filters for DAPI, GFP, and Texas Red imaging. Interfacing adapters and installation for the light source and filters on the Leica M165C are also required. Individual contract line items specify the light source, adapters, and each filter. Delivery is required within 30 days of award, with any schedule changes to be immediately communicated. The microscope upgrades will allow for improved research on fruit flies and other insects at the USDA laboratory in Columbia, Missouri.

Specifications Fluorescent source and filters for Leica M165C microscope
GENERAL INFORMATION
1.0 Scope of Work: To add a LED fluorescent source and three different light filters (Texas
Red, GFP, and DAPI) to an existing Leica M165C microscope. This will allow scientists to add additional capabilities to their most basic level of research at the USDA-ARS Biological Control of Insects Research Laboratory (BCIRL) in Columbia, MO.
Specifically, this will facilitate a complete characterization of fruit fly, Drosophila suzukii, by determining the structure of the gut and determining the localization of gut lipids. The microscope is necessary, also, to complete microinjections into the fruit flies for inserting gene-silencing and pharmaceutical agents into the insects as well as for microbiome experiments.
2.0 Background: Fluorescent light can be used to enhance imaging of biological samples through various means. By adding LED fluorescent capabilities to our existing Leica M165C microscope, we can use this in our research. This will greatly improve the quality and quantity of data we can generate from samples. The updated microscope system is to be used for dissecting and imaging insects, which are required for BCIRL to fulfill its mission. The microscope will facilitate progress on laboratory objectives.
