About this file
This document outlines the minimum specifications for a spray droplet sizing system procurement by the Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service Field Research Implementation and Information Delivery Plains Area. The system must be capable of measuring droplet diameters from 25 to 5000 um, droplet directional vectors, absolute density and flux of spray, and droplet velocity ranging from 0 to 120 m/s. It must have a minimum field of view of 10 x 10 mm2, work at distances of 15 inches or more, and be protected against dusty and wet environments rated IP54. The software should integrate all system controls, allow custom data processing, and report key statistics on droplet size distributions and velocities. Related is federal contract opportunity number 12805B23Q0717 for a spray droplet imaging and sizing system with the Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service Field Research Implementation and Information Delivery Plains Area.

Spray Droplet Sizing System
Minimum specifications required.
This system is being purchased to support the Unit’s aerial application spray nozzle atomization research efforts. As such, the following requirements represent the minimum level of performance to meet the established research needs:
· Capable of measurement of droplet diameters from 25 to 5000 um.
· Capable of measurement of droplet directional vector.
· Capable of measurement of absolute density and flux of spray.
· Sensor should be capable of acquiring images at a minimum rate of 25 fps.
· Capable of measurement of droplet velocity range 0 – 120 m/s.
· Minimum working distance (front of measurement probe to measurement plane and measurement plane to light source) of 15 in, or 30 inches from probe to light source.
· Capable of field of view (depending on magnification) of up to 10 x 10 mm2, with minimum depth of field for a 100-micrometer particle of 2 mm.
· Instrumentation and sensor shall provide for non-invasive measurement of spray cloud.
· Capable of detection of air inclusions or other foreign matter in droplet and non-spherical drops.
· System shall provide software that integrates all system controls, operation, and data processing.
· Software should allow for user created data processing algorithms and routines to be programmed and implemented.
· Minimum statistics reported shall include: 10, 50 and 90% volume diameters, full dynamic size distribution, number of particles captured, droplet velocity dimension vector, number, area and volume-based distributions, and deviations on all data.
· Shall provide for saving imaging data for presentation or post-analysis.
· Image acquisition systems should allow for use of established and verified calibrations at any preset magnifications and user applied calibrations.
· System should come with any tools or devices required to properly align probe and light source as needed.
· The test environments for intended use represent heavy spray, high wind speed environments such that system should be protected against dusty, wet, heavy sprays, and possibly splash conditions, meaning a minimum ingress protection rating IP54, and operational temperatures from 40 to 100 deg F.
· Due to safety issues and site restrictions, backlighting or flashlamp components should be LED or other non-laser-based devices and provide sufficiently short pulse durations to achieve the required range in velocity measurements.
