2.2 WOODEN SHIPPING CONTAINER DESCRIPTIONS
See attached Supplies Item List – Wooden Shipping Containers.
2.3 SPECIFIC SUPPLIES REQUIREMENTS
A. ASTM B660-15 Modifications
1. The Government requires plywood or paper overlaid veneer boxes (telescopic) for flat sheet that are a modification of the design illustrated in ASTM B660-15 Figure S1.2, Details A & B.
2. Section 5.1 of the ASTM standards allows the purchaser to request modifications provided they exceed the materials, methods and container requirements in this ASTM standard. The details of the modifications are as follows:
a. The bottom panel/floor shall be constructed using 3/8 IN. thick CDX plywood instead of fiberboard (ASTM D4727). The top shall be constructed from CDX plywood & additional 3 ½ IN. wide X 3/8 IN. thick plywood strips will be installed as internal cleats on the underside of the top panel assembly opposite of the top panels’ intermediate, end & side cleats; set back far enough to allow the plywood to nest into the containers inside dimensions acting as internal cleats that prevent the top panel from shifting when properly banded as required for nail-free closure.
The internal plywood cleats must be secured from the inside of the container using fasteners that are a minimum of 1/8 IN. longer in length than the thickness of the top panel assembly and must be J-clinched to prevent fasteners from withdrawing from the top panel assembly.
b. Two boards shall be added to the underside of the overlaid veneer box to act as fork lift points and the nearest edge of each board will be located 11 IN. out from the center line of the length of the overlaid veneer box between and flush with the height of the side cleats. The boards shall be constructed from 1 IN. X 12 IN. dimensional lumber or ¾ IN. CDX grade plywood cut to the same length and width.
c. Each overlaid veneer box shall have six (6) 2-1/2 IN. high X 3-1/2 IN. wide X 12 IN. long
(actual dimensions) rubbing strips, one on each corner and one centered on the centerline of the crate length, on each side. The rubbing strips shall be mounted with the 12 IN. length running parallel to the side cleats. The rubbing strip bottoms will be chamfered at both ends to allow the overlaid veneer box to be pushed from either end.
2.4 SAMPLES
A. The Contractor shall submit one (1) sample of each of the three (3) shipping containers within (fifteen) 15 calendar days after date of contract award to the Government Point of Contact (GPOC) at DLA Distribution Oklahoma City for approval. See 3.4.
B. Within ten (10) calendar days after receipt of the sample, the GPOC shall notify the Contractor concerning acceptability of the sample. The Government will issue a delivery order to accept and reimburse the Contractor for the acceptable samples.
C. If the sample does not comply with the technical specifications, the Contractor shall be responsible for correction and resubmittal of the sample at no cost to the Government.
D. If the Contractor cannot provide acceptable samples, the Government reserves the right to terminate the contract award and either issue an award to the next lowest offeror or resolicit the requirement.
