About this file
This document is a requirements/specifications document for a Low-Power Dual-Comb Spectrometer requested by the Fiber Sources and Applications group at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The key requirements include:
The system must contain two fully self-referencable fiber frequency combs, one common narrow linewidth continuous wave laser, associated photoreceivers, thermal control, integrated pump laser diodes, and all actuators required to phase lock the two frequency combs. The physical package size must be no larger than 60 dB, with specific performance requirements on signal-to-noise ratios, optical phase noise, and actuator bandwidths. The delivery timeframe is 4 months after award. The system does not include the digital control electronics. This document is referenced in the related federal contract opportunity for a "Low Power Dual-Comb Spectrometer", Solicitation Number NB6750202401783, with the Department of Commerce NIST as the procuring agency.

Requirements / Specification Document
TITLE: Low-Power Dual-Comb Spectrometer
Requesting Laboratory / Division / Group:
Communications Technology Laboratory Spectrum Technology and Research Division Fiber Sources and Applications Group (675.02)
General Statement of Need:
The Fiber Sources and Applications group is developing methods for precision ranging and timing over free space based on frequency combs. The critical technology for future fielded systems will be high-performance, dual-frequency comb systems. In addition to achieving low relative phase noise by phase-locking to a common continuous wave laser, this dual comb system must also have low size-weight-and-power (SWAP) and the potential for future space operation.
To this end, the group requires an optical laser system that includes two mutually coherent, controllable laser frequency comb sources with integrated pump diodes within a maximum 9-liter size and 20 W power consumption. This effort focuses on the optics package, including the femtosecond laser, carrier-envelope-offset frequency generation, photodetection units, pump lasers, and necessary temperature control/tuning. The system does not include the feedback control electronics. It is assumed the SWAP will be minimized by including the two-frequency comb optical subsystems and a compact continuous wave laser within the same physical package. While it is assumed that erbium-doped fiber will be used, there should be evidence this fiber can be compatible with space operation. If highly nonlinear fiber is used for carrier-envelope-offset detection, evidence must be provided that this fiber is also compatible with future space operations.

Notes: 1) Excludes the secondary electronics board with the pump diodes and associated drive electronics.
2) Calculated by multiplying required DC voltage and current during normal operation, including specified outside temperature range. (4) Phase noise calculated by integration of the power spectral density from Fourier frequency of 1 Hz to 1 MHz. (5) Signal generated by heterodyne overlap between the two frequency comb outputs, with a set carrier offset frequency and at a known difference in repetition frequency. This cross-correlation, or interferogram, signal can be Hilbert-transformed to yield a peak voltage. All secondary interference signals should be suppressed below the given specification.
