Project Title:

KLMN Macroinvertebrate Analysis for Aquatic Habitats of Klamath Network

Project Need:

Starting in the summer, 2022, the Klamath Network is conducting sampling of waterbodies in Whiskeytown, Oregon Caves, Redwoods, Lassen Volcanic and Crater Lake as part of the Aquatic Community Monitoring. At each of these sites, the field crew collects macroinvertebrate samples. The samples are preserved in ethanol and require processing by a taxonomic laboratory. At the laboratory, the invertebrates are separated from sample material, sub-sampled, enumerated and identified.

The purpose of this work would be to provide an accurate species list and relative abundance of macroinvertebrate at each stream sampled. The end result will be a dataset of macroinvertebrate species used in furthering the Klamath Network Integrated Water Quality and Aquatic Communities Protocols. The resulting data will be used to determine the status of ecological conditions in these parks.

Objectives:

Provide species lists and relative abundances for each sample.

Primary Activities:

Rhithron Associates, Inc is a taxonomic laboratory. Upon receipt of the sample, they will subsample to a minimum of 600 individual macroinvertebrates(or the entire sample). The macroinvertebrates will be identified to SAFIT level II (Southwestern Association of Freshwater Invertebrate Taxonomists), which includes lowest practical level for Chironomidae midges (generally genus/species).

Schedule

Entire project is to be conducted between September 22st 2022 to August 31st 2023.

Deliverables

The products of this contract will be:

(1) A Microsoft Excel spreadsheet of macroinvertebrate analyses for each sample provided, in the client’s standard format.
