About this file
This document is a Questions and Answers (Q&A) file for a NIST solicitation (No. AMDTCRQ2501844) for an Environmental Chamber. The Q&A provides clarification on technical specifications for the chamber, specifically addressing details about concrete specimen testing requirements. Key technical details include:
The chamber must accommodate 30 concrete cylinders (4-inch by 8-inch) with specific placement requirements: 10 specimens per shelf with air separation between each cylinder, and a total anticipated load of no more than 20 lbs per shelf. NIST personnel indicated they will use multiple temperature and relative humidity set points for specimen testing, including 23°C (30-90% RH), 50°C (80% RH), and 80°C (80% RH). Each tested specimen is expected to weigh approximately 2 lbs, and the chamber's interior dimensions must allow for proper specimen positioning and air circulation.

Questions and Answers NIST Solicitation No. AMDTCRQ2501844
Environmental Chamber
1. What is the anticipated weight of the concrete specimens that the shelving load must maintain?
o Answer: It is anticipated that no more than 20 lbs would be loaded onto each shelf.
Please see the revised Requirements document reflecting a change to the minimum requirements for the shelving load.
2. Can NIST clarify what set points will be used to run samples?
o Answer: At this current time, the following set points are commonly used by NIST personnel for aging and conditioning concrete specimens. However, this is not an exhaustive list and other set points may be used to run future samples.
23 °C at RH values ranging from 30% to 90%
50°C; 80% RH
80°C; 80% RH
3. The following questions apply to Section II, Line Item 0001, A.b – Technical
Specification, which states, “Chamber interior dimension (working area) must be large enough to hold 30 4-inch by 8-inch cylindrical concrete specimens” o How much does each cylinder weigh?
Answer: In total, it is anticipated that no more than 20 lbs would be loaded onto each shelf, and each tested specimen (4-inch diameter and 2-inch height) would weigh approximately 2 lbs. The attached Requirements document has been revised to indicate the revised minimum specifications for this requirement.
o What is the layout pattern you have planned for these cylinders?
Answer: It is anticipated for specimens to be positioned in the chamber where the 4-inch diameter face would be touching the shelf. In this scenario, the interior dimension of the chamber must allow for 10 of these specimens to fit on a shelf with little to no touching of the specimens, allowing a sufficient amount of air to surround each specimen.
o In order for the 30 cylinders to fit on the 2 shelves, is it acceptable if they are stacked on each shelf such that there will not be air separation between each cylinder?
Answer: No, there must be air separation between cylinders. See the above answer.
