Gray Eagle Trail Bridge Repair Pre-Bid Conference – Q&A

Can Gabions be utilized under the abutment?

NO. The footing will be a solid concrete/masonry structure

How much excavation in expected into the fill surface under the cribbing?

Digging into the fill backwall under the crib must be minimized. The cribbing is very precarious as is. The intent is to leave that surface as undisturbed as possible and clean away the sand, gravel, and rocks under the new concrete plug. The concrete should be resting on large (>200#) boulders. As provided for in the Schedule of Items, the maximum expected excavation is two CYs.

Can the contractor utilize the temporary support structure to brace forms or for positioning?

NO. No attachment can be made to that structure. Its sole function is to support the bridge during construction as a safety measure. No other force or loading shall be applied to it. The form(s) may be braced against large rocks in the creek or on the bank. Use of stakes and/or drill rod for bracing will be permitted outside of the active stream channel.

Can large re-bar be used in place of the flat-bar stirrups on the Bearing Plate?

Yes. 4- # 6(#19m) bars can be utilized in place of the flat-bar.

Where can waste concrete from hose/bucket be place?

Waste Concrete (hose/buckets contents) can be placed in the rocks on the up-stream and down-stream sides of the crib abutment. NO concrete in the stream or on the stream bank. If a hose is used, flush water may be passed through filter bags and the water deposited on the trail at the east end of the bridge.

Can “Keystone” type block systems be utilized.

After award, the government may consider alternate methods for retaining the abutment fill however, offers must respond to the solicitation to be considered responsive.

Can materials and equipment be transported through the flagged construction access?

Only the concrete if the contractor utilized a pump and hose. The hose shall be placed within the flagged construction area down to the bridge. All other materials, equipment, and personnel shall access the site via the trail. Rubber tracked, motorized carriers less than 26” wide will be allowed on the trail. No travel or construction activity is allowed off the trail tread in the vicinity of the control area flagging (Red/Black).

Can other methods be used to transport the concrete other than pump and hose?

The means of transport remains the responsibility of the contractor within the restrictions as otherwise noted.
