Green Pony Marking Guidelines BA = Basal Area

Sq.ft. = square feet

Matrix – Units 2A, 2B, 5, 6, 9, 10, 13A, 13B, 14, 15A, 15B, 16A, 16B, 21, 40, 41, 44

General Marking Prescription

Cut tree mark (trees 10” + dbh) - Thin from below to a residual basal area of 80 – 100 sq.ft. of BA, including oak species. Species preference for retention include: Ponderosa pine, Sugar pine, Douglas-fir, black oak, incense cedar. Other species can be retained where they exist for species diversity while meeting overall density target. Retain largest, healthiest, most vigorous trees, well spaced, although some clumping is acceptable.

Where clumps of larger diameter trees occur, higher BA retention is allowed, up to 120 sq.ft. BA. Remove larger diameter trees that have indications of high levels of disease (ie. Sugar pine blister rust spiked tops, noticeable cankers, Douglas-fir mistletoe, active beetle infestations, etc). Hardwoods are not to be marked as cut trees.

Snags

Retain 3-5 snags per acre of the largest available, minimum of 15”+ dbh; min. 20 feet height, clumped where feasible. Species preference for retention: Ponderosa pine, Jeffery pine, sugar pine, Douglas-fir, incense cedar, red fir, oaks, madrone.

Hardwood Retention

Retain hardwoods to meet a minimum of 5 sq.ft BA of trees 12 inches in diameter, with a minimum of one tree/acre greater than 20 inches in diameter, where available. Thin conifers around these trees to provide additional sunlight. Retain smaller diameter hardwood where less than 5 sq.ft BA is available.

Matrix –Deer – Units 3, 4, 31B, 42

General Marking Prescription

Cut tree mark (trees 10”+ dbh) - Thin from below to a residual basal area of 80 – 100 sq.ft. of BA, including oak species. Species preference for retention include: Ponderosa pine, Sugar pine, Douglas-fir, black oak, incense cedar. Where clumps of larger diameter trees occur, higher BA retention is allowed, up to 120 sq.ft. BA. Remove larger diameter trees that have indications of high levels of disease (ie. Sugar pine blister rust spiked tops, noticeable cankers, Douglas-fir mistletoe, active beetle infestations, etc). ). Hardwoods are not to be marked as cut trees.

Retain 3-5 snags per acre of the largest available, minimum of 15”+ dbh; min. 20 feet height, clumped where feasible. Species preference for retention: Ponderosa pine, Jeffery pine, sugar pine, Douglas-fir, incense cedar, red fir, oaks, madrone.

Retain hardwoods to meet a minimum of 15 sq.ft BA of trees 12 inches in diameter, with a minimum of one tree/acre greater than 20 inches in diameter, where available. Where 15 sq.ft BA does not occur, retain minimum of 75% of existing hardwoods. Thin conifers around these trees to provide additional sunlight. Retain smaller diameter hardwood where less than 15 sq.ft BA is available.

LSR (Foraging Habitat) - Deer – Units 27A, 27B, 31A

General Marking Prescription

Cut tree mark (trees 10”-24” dbh) - Thin from below to a residual basal area of 100 – 120 sq.ft. of BA, including oak species. Species preference for retention include: Ponderosa pine, Sugar pine, Douglas-fir, black oak, incense cedar. Other species can be retained where they exist for species diversity while meeting overall density target. Retain largest, healthiest, most vigorous trees, well spaced. Where clumps of larger diameter trees occur, higher BA retention is allowed, up to 150 sq.ft. BA. Remove larger diameter trees that have indications of high levels of disease (ie. Sugar pine blister rust spiked tops, noticeable cankers, Douglas-fir mistletoe, active beetle infestations, etc). Larger diameter trees with defects (basal scarring, rot, etc) may be retained for long term cavity habitat. Hardwoods are not to be marked as cut trees.

Retain all snags within units.

Riparian Reserves (RR) – Units 6, 13A, 14, 15B, 16A, 17, 31B, 41

Riparian Reserve boundaries will be marked on the ground and designated on Sale Area Maps, 150 feet (slope distance) from the edge of the high water mark, or to the slope break, which ever is greater. Within the RR outside of the SMZ, the marking prescription would be the same as the rest of the unit. Retain all snags within RR unless identified as a hazard tree per Forest definitions.

Streamside Management Zone (SMZ) will be marked on the ground and designated on Sale Area Maps 50 feet (slope distance) from the edge of the high water mark, or to the slope break, whichever is greater. Retain all riparian associated vegetation (willows, dogwood, etc). Trees felled within the SMZ must be directionally felled towards the RR, and endlined or grapple skidded from outside the SMZ. Within SMZs:

Retain 120-150 sqft. BA, or minimum of 50% canopy cover

Retain 70% of existing ground cover (litter/duff) on slopes >50% and 50% of existing ground cover on slopes <50%.

Cover bared soil areas, if greater than 50 square feet, with slash or mulch to achieve the ground cover objective of 50%.

Exceptions – SMZ may allow mechanical equipment if necessary to cross stream channel. Crossings would require approval from District

Hydrologist and Fisheries Biologist. Equipment crossings would be planned during dry season, when no water is present. Crossings would be protected with logs or other materials to protect the integrity of the channel, and would be removed after use. Stream channel would be rehabilitated if disturbed.

Visual Quality Objectives

Retention – Unit 41 (Hammerhorn Lake, Campground)

Cut tree mark only on side of trees facing away from campground/lake area. Retain clumps of understory vegetation adjacent to lake and campground viewing areas, and scattered throughout unit. Prescribed burning will need to protect these clumps. Slash work will be accomplished and handpiles created will not occur within visual distance of the lake or campground. Stumps should be cut to 6” height where feasible. Sporax

(registered trademark for Borax fungicide) will be spread on all conifer stumps greater than 8” diameter within 1-2 hours of cutting (unless raining, then as soon after rain stops as possible). No borax should be applied within 25 feet of shoreline of Hammerhorn Lake.

Partial Retention – Units 2A, 2B, 3, 4,13A, 13B, 27A, 27B, 31B, 40

Heavier retention of overstory along roads where operationally feasible. Retain higher levels of understory vegetation, clumped along road and within first 100 feet of road.
