Text version

USDA-ARS Pullman, WA has a requirement to build a covered awning next to our existing covered storage building at 4153 Albion Rd, Pullman, WA 99163.

This structure should be -20 feet long, 20 foot roof peak, and a width of 48 foot span.

-Roofing is required to be an equal match to existing attached building roof, to maximum extent possible.

-The ground is asphalt with railroad iron inlaid at four distances from the building.

-The structure need to be self-supporting and withstand normal local weather conditions including; heavy snowfall, and high winds.

-The structure shall not impede the use of the sliding door located on the southeast side of the building.

-Rain gutters and downspouts are required to reach ground level to prevent rain splash. This can be tied into the two downspouts already on the building.

-Support columns on the road shall be protected with barriers to prevent vehicles from damaging this structure, or cement posts on the awning to protect from potential driving hazards.

-The north and east sides of the structure should be open to allow access and ventilation.

-The south side of the awning should be stabilized with a partial wall to keep winds from lifting the roof from the Southwest direction which is where most of our wind blows from during the year.

- Dimensions may be slightly modified for this structure if it is in the best interest for stability and/or design. Alternate dimensions will be reviewed as acceptable and eligible for award as long as the structure does not impede on vehicle access to the farm (i.e. semi-trucks, combines).

All hot work operations shall be under the supervision of a competent person who would be identified as the Fire Prevention Program Manager. Fire watchers (if applicable) shall be assigned no other duties. Approval shall not be granted until:

It has been determined that hot work can be safely conducted at the desired location.

Combustibles have been moved away or covered by an approved tarpaulin.

The atmosphere is not flammable.

A fire watch (with dedicated extinguisher) is posted for the duration of the work and for 30 minutes thereafter (60 minutes for torch-applied roofing operations to ensure that sparks or drops of hot metal do not start fires. All cracks or openings in floors shall be safely covered or closed.

City or County work permits may be required. It is the contractor’s responsibility to obtain all required permits prior to starting work on this project.
