SPECIAL PROJECT SPECIFICATION - 560
PREFABRICATED STEEL TRUSS PEDESTIAN BRIDGE
560.01 Work
This work shall consist of furnishing and erecting a prefabricated steel truss pedestrian bridge units as shown on the drawings. The work shall also include construction of the abutments, including excavation and backfill.
These specifications are for a fully engineered clear span bridge of steel construction and shall be regarded as minimum standards for design and construction
560.02 Qualified Suppliers
Each bidder is required to identify their intended bridge supplier as part of the bid submittal and shall provide the following documentation for any proposed supplier:
1. Product Literature
2. All documentation to insure the proposed substitution will be in compliance with these specifications. This shall include:
* Representative design calculations
* Representative drawings
* Splicing and erection procedures
* Inspection and Maintenance procedures
* AISC Shop Certification (Simple Steel Bridges)
* Welder Qualifications
560.03 GENERAL FEATURES OF DESIGN
1. Span -The bridge span shall be as shown on the drawings.
2. Width -The bridge width shall provide a minimum clearance of 6'-0" between railing elements.
3. Truss Type - Bridge(s) shall be designed as a half through truss with one (1) diagonal per panel and square end vertical members.
4. Through truss bridges will be designed utilizing underhung floor beams.
5. The top of the top chord shall not be less than 42 inches above the deck (measured from the high point of the riding surface) unless shown otherwise on the drawings.
6. Safety Rails - Horizontal safety rails shall be placed on the structured so as to prevent a 6" sphere from passing through the truss.
Attachment #2 Solicitation No.:AG-0261-S-13-0075
560.04 ENGINEERING
Structural design of the bridge structure(s) shall be performed by or under the direct supervision of a licensed professional engineer and done in accordance with recognized engineering practices and principles. The engineer shall be licensed to practice in the State in which the project is located. The design shall be in accordance with AASHTO LRFD Guide Specifications for the Design of Pedestrian Bridges, Dec. 2009.
1. Live Load - Main supporting members shall be designed for a live load of 90 psf of bridge walkway unless a greater snow loading is shown on the drawings. When a snowload greater than 90 psf is shown on the drawings the bridge shall be designed for the snow loading.
2. Vehicle Load - the bridge shall be designed for an occasional single maintenance vehicle of 5,000 lbs. The vehicle load shall be distributed as a four-wheel vehicle with 80% of the load on the rear wheels. The wheel track width of the vehicle shall be 4’-0” and the wheel base shall be 5’-6”. The vehicle load shall not be placed in combination with the pedestrian live load or snow load. A vehicle impact allowance is not required.
3. Camber - The bridge shall have a vertical camber dimension at midspan equal to
100% of the full dead load deflection plus 1% of the full length of the bridge.
4. Top Chord/Railing Loads – The top chord, truss verticals, and floor beams shall be designed for lateral wind loads and for any loads required to provide top chord stability as outlined in AASHTO; however, in no case shall the load be less than 50 pounds per lineal foot or a 200 pound point load, whichever produces greater stresses, applied in any direction at any point along the top chord or at the top of the safety system (42” or 54” above the deck level), if higher than the top chord. The 50 plf load shall be simultaneously applied transversely and vertically.
560.05 MATERIALS
1. Unpainted Steel - Bridges which are not to be painted shall be fabricated from high strength, low alloy, atmospheric corrosion resistant ASTM A847 cold-formed welded square and rectangular tubing and/or ASTM A588, or ASTM A242, ASTM A606 plate and structural steel shapes (Fy = 50,000 psi). The minimum corrosion index of atmospheric corrosion resistant steel, as determined in accordance with ASTM G101, shall be 6.0.
2. Wood Decking - Wood decking shall be West Coast Regional Douglas Fir select structural planks graded according to WCLB Standard Grading Rules No. 17, paragraph 123b. The planks shall be treated with Pentachlorophenol, 5% by weight, in petroleum oil, AWPA P9, conforming to AWPA C1 for oil-borne preservatives or
Attachment #2
Copper Naphthenate type A or C, conforming to the AWPA P8 and P9, containing not less than 5% in petroleum oil, AWPA P9. The minimum oil retained shall be the minimum for timber above ground, AWPA C2 and C28 All materials shall be produced in accordance with Best Management Practices For The Use of Wood in Aquatic Environments, Jan. 1995 or later.
For transverse wood decking, wheel loads shall be assumed to act on one plank. The wheel loads shall be distributed on the plank along a length equal to the tire print width (W). The plank shall be designed for shear and bending in accordance with the support conditions and spacings.
560.06 WELDING
1. Welding Process - Welding and weld qualification tests shall conform to the provisions of the ANSI/AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code. The welding process shall be the gas metal arc welding (GMAW) process with filler material per AWS A5.28. Filler metal shall be as required by AWS for bare applications of ASTM A588 base metal.
2. Welders - Welders shall be properly accredited experienced operators, each of whom shall submit certification of satisfactorily passing AWS standard qualification tests for all positions, satisfactory evidence of experience and skill in welding structural steel with the kind of welding to be used in the work, and who has demonstrated the ability to make uniform, sound welds of the type required.
560.07 SUBMITTALS
1. Welder certifications showing compliance with Section 560.06.2
2. Welding procedures in compliance with Section 560.06.1
3. Steel Certification - All certified mill test reports shall be furnished upon request.
Mill test reports shall show the chemical analysis and physical test results for each heat of steel used in the work. All steel shall be produced in the United States of America.
4. Bolt Certification - All certified mill test reports shall be furnished upon request.
Mill test reports shall show the chemical analysis and physical test results for each heat of steel used in the work. All bolts shall be produced in the United States of America.
