Make sure all work is flush, square, level and has proper reveals per manufacturer’s specs. If not sure ask COR before starting.

Ensure that all work is free from dirt, damage or defects. Pick up excess materials within 2 days of job completion. Do not use windows for access or to pull cords, hoses or siding materials though. Do not cut through trim or siding while on the building to avoid damaging the underlayment. Do not nail cleats or wood blocks onto or in finished siding products.

When a manufacturer or a standard uses subjective words, e.g., “should, could, may”, etc., these words shall mean “shall, will, required”, etc. When the word “recommended” is used, it shall mean “required”. If there is a conflict between general and specific provisions, the specific shall govern.

Upon Notice to Proceed, the contractor shall make steady and uninterrupted progress toward the completion of the work of this contract.

Demolition Before beginning any demolition or deconstruction work, survey and examine the site to determine the extent of the work. Take necessary precautions to avoid damage to existing items to remain in place, to be reused, or to remain property of Government.

Waste Disposal Facilities: Provide waste-collection containers in sizes adequate to handle waste from construction operations. Comply with requirements of agency(ies) with jurisdiction.

Disposal of removed materials shall be the contractor's responsibility. All debris and removed material is the property of the contractor and shall be recycled or legally disposed of in a manner that is consistent with and complies with local and state regulations.

Remove existing materials, including underlayment. Re-secure any substrate nails that have backed out and any remaining nail fragments prior to installation of new materials.

Installation All work shall be done in conformance with the Secretary of the Interior Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.

Follow the installation procedures described in the Cedar Shake & Shingle Bureau Wall Manual unless otherwise indicated herein.

Store materials so they remain clean and dry.

Roofing Remove existing roof. Replace damaged or deteriorated wood decking encountered with like material.

Any replaced member must span a minimum of three support members (rafters), unless decking material is tongue & groove- exposed from the underside, in which case the deteriorated member must span at least one truss width.

Install flashing, roof boots and drip edge. Form flashing to profiles to match that which was removed and to protect roofing materials from physical damage and shed water. Form sections square and accurate to profile, in maximum possible lengths, free from distortion or defects detrimental to appearance or performance. Weather-lap joints minimum 2 inches. Seal work projecting through or mounted on roof with asphalt roofing cement and make weather tight. Verify that roof penetrations and plumbing stacks are in place and flashed to deck surfaces. Drip edge shall be installed around entire perimeter of roof.

All new flashing shall replicate the character and details of the existing flashing. Furnish and install lead coated copper flashings where lead coated flashings were removed.

Sheet metal flashings shall be as required to match the existing sheet metal systems. Refer to the publication, "Copper and Common Sense" by Revere Copper and Brass and all recommendations of the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors National Association concerning methods and materials to be used in the fabrication and construction of sheet metal flashings.

Form and fabricate sheets, seams, strips, cleats, edge treatments, integral flashings, and other components of copper to profiles, patterns, and drainage arrangements shown and as required for permanently leak-proof construction.

It is the intent of this project to have as little soldering of copper as is practical in order to properly install strong, watertight metal flashings. Joints shall be interlocked and crimped where possible. Flanges which extend onto the roof surface shall always be soldered. All corners shall be soldered to provide strength and a waterproof connection.

Comply with Military Specification MIL-S-6872B entitled, "General Specifications for Soldering Process" when forming soldered joints. Use conduction soldering methods. Areas to be joined shall be cleaned of all oil, grease, pencil marks, paint, dirt or other foreign substances. Remove all burrs using files, grinding stones or other methods. Hold parts in place using clamps, jigs and supports or by self-fixturing. If parts are tack-soldered to hold them in place, the area of tack-soldering shall be reworked into the final soldering. Parts cannot move during the soldering process.

Flux shall be applied to all surfaces that are to receive solder. Flux-cored solder should not be used. Flux shall be fluid when heated and effective in removing and excluding oxides and other impurities from the joint. Flux should be readily displaced by the molten solder.

Areas to be joined shall be heated above the liquidus temperature of the solder. To deliver maximum heat, the solder shall be applied to the joint and not the bit of the iron. Allow solder to flow in place to provide a minimum 1" final width of solder over the joint. Joint shall not be disturbed until it has been completely cooled. After soldering completely, remove all flux and acid by washing and scrubbing with a neutralizing agent.

Edges of all sheets of uncoated copper to be soldered shall be tinned with solder on both sides for width not less than 1 ½ “. All soldering shall be done slowly with well-heated coppers; heat sheet thoroughly and sweat copper completely through the full width of the seam. Ample solder shall be used and seam shall show at least one full inch of evenly flowed solder. Wherever possible all soldering shall be done in flat position.

Install self-adhered roofing underlayment according to manufacturer’s directions.

Tack down Rain screen. One tack (or nail) approximately every 3 square feet is adequate. Install with dimples down to present the flat side as the nailing surface. Do not lap layers of Rain screen. Each course should butt against previous course. Work from fascia to ridge just ahead of shake and felt installation to avoid walking directly on Rain screen (may be slippery, especially when wet). Allow 1/4" for Rain screen thickness.

Install roofing. Shakes must be doubled at all eaves. Butts of first course shakes shall project 1 1/2" beyond the fascia and approximately 1" over the gable or rake end. Spacing between adjacent shake (joints) should be a minimum of 1/4" and a maximum of 3/8". Shakes shall be laid with a side lap not less than 1 1/2" between joints in adjacent courses, and not more than 10% shall be in direct alignment in alternate courses.

Each shake or shingle shall be applied with two nails. Nails shall be applied approximately 3/4" from the edge and approximately 1 1/2" above the exposure line. Nails shall be long enough to penetrate into the sheathing at least 3/4" or all the way through. Nails must be driven flush with the surface of the shake or shingle. Overdriven nails will be rejected and require replacement of the shake or shingle.

Install soffit, fascia and trim materials with stainless steel ring shank nails intended for the purpose.

Replace any deteriorated soffit, fascia and trim.

Caulking All joints where water invasion may occur are to be filled with Benjamin Moore Elastomeric 465 01 Caulk, or an approved equivalent, not to be applied until primer coating is applied and allowed to dry a minimum of 24 hours.

Storage of Equipment and Materials The contractor shall be responsible for storage of all materials and equipment; the Park COR and / or Project Inspector must approve the contractor’s use of any space on the site in advance.

Upon completion of the work of this contract, the storage area shall be left broom clean by the contractor.

Clean-Up After completion of the work, construction debris, excess material and equipment shall be removed from the site and legally disposed. The contractor shall rake the grounds and use a magnet of sufficient strength to ensure no metal is left behind. Upon completion of the work of this contract, work areas shall be left broom clean by the contractor.

Period of Performance Preconstruction meeting – Will be held within one week of contract award.

Notice to Proceed – Will be provided to the contractor after preconstruction meeting and upon receipt of all required documents.

Material Submittals – Due within 48 hours (or 2 business days) of Notice to Proceed Proposed completed work with all documentation submittals – 45 days after date on the Notice to Proceed.
