Thoroughly rinse raked joints with water to remove fine particles.

Apply mortar in layers not exceeding 3/8 “ in depth. Apply each layer fully compacted into the joint and allow to become thumbprint hard prior to the application of the next layer. Tool final layer of mortar after it has become thumbprint hard.

Remove spalled, eroded and cracked brick and replace with new. Remove and salvage loose bricks for reinstallation. Install new or replaced bricks. Tool the joints to a profile matching the adjacent brick masonry mortar joints.

All new flashing shall replicate the character and details of the existing flashing. Furnish and install lead coated copper chimney flashings including, but not limited to, step, base, reglet and counter flashings.

Sheet metal flashings shall be as required to match the existing sheet metal systems. Refer to the publication, "Copper and Common Sense" by Revere Copper and Brass and all recommendations of the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors National Association concerning methods and materials to be used in the fabrication and construction of sheet metal flashings.

Form and fabricate sheets, seams, strips, cleats, edge treatments, integral flashings, and other components of copper to profiles, patterns, and drainage arrangements shown and as required for permanently leak-proof construction.

It is the intent of this project to have as little soldering of copper as is practical in order to properly install strong, watertight metal flashings. Joints shall be interlocked and crimped where possible. Flanges which extend onto the roof surface shall always be soldered. All corners shall be soldered to provide strength and a waterproof connection.

Comply with Military Specification MIL-S-6872B entitled, "General Specifications for Soldering Process" when forming soldered joint. Use conduction soldering methods. Areas to be joined shall be cleaned of all oil, grease, pencil marks, paint, dirt or other foreign substances. Remove all burrs using files, grinding stones or other methods. Hold parts in place using clamps, jigs and supports or by self-fixturing. If parts are tack-soldered to hold them in place, the area of tack-soldering shall be reworked into the final soldering. Parts cannot move during the soldering process.

Flux shall be applied to all surfaces that are to receive solder. Flux-cored solder should not be used. Flux shall be fluid when heated and effective in removing and excluding oxides and other impurities from the joint. Flux should be readily displaced by the molten solder.

Areas to be joined shall be heated above the liquidus temperature of the solder. To deliver maximum heat, the solder shall be applied to the joint and not the bit of the iron. Allow solder to flow in place to provide a minimum 1" final width of solder over the joint. Joint shall not be disturbed until it has been completely cooled. After soldering completely, remove all flux and acid by washing and scrubbing with a neutralizing agent.

Separate dissimilar metals by painting each metal surface in area of contact with a bituminous coating, by applying rubberized asphalt underlayment to each metal surface, or by other permanent separation as recommended by manufacturer’s or dissimilar metals.

Exposed masonry walls (behind and below counterflashing), and sheet metal flanges (both sides) shall be primed with water based asphaltic primer, prior to roofing or flashing installation. Apply primer by brush at a rate of 200 square feet per gallon with no bare spots. Allow primer to dry thoroughly prior to installing the flashings.

Edges of all sheets of uncoated copper to be soldered shall be tinned with solder on both sides for width not less than 1 ½ “. All soldering shall be done slowly with well-heated coppers; heat sheet thoroughly and sweat copper completely through the full width of the seam. Ample solder shall be used and seam shall show at least one full inch of evenly flowed solder. Wherever possible all soldering shall be done in flat position.

Stepped Base Flashing: Form from separate pieces of lead coated copper concealed between each shingle course and extending 6’’ minimum outward onto the roof and 4’’ minimum up the chimney.

The upper edge of each stepped flashing should extend 3”‘ above each course of shingles. The lower edge should be ½’’ above the shingles forming the next course. At chimney corners connect base flashing by a locked soldered seam.

Counterflashing: Clean out and chisel out 3/8’’ wide by 1’’ deep reglet groove. Insert counterflashing 9 - 10“ above roof decks, extend down vertical surfaces over upturned vertical leg of base flashings not less than 5 “. Fold the exposed edges of counterflashing ½“. At stepped counterflashing, install in short lengths a minimum of 8“ by 10“. Provide end laps in counterflashing not less than 6’’ in the direction of water flow and render weathertight with plastic cement. Secure the flashings in the reglets with construction adhesive and lead wedges spaced at 8“ minimum; Tamp wedges in place tightly without spalling brick surfaces. Fill reglet joints with tooled mortar. Crimp clips to bottom of new reglet flashing.

Apron flashing: Extend over new shingles not less than 24“ with a ½’’ hemmed edge and extend up the chimney face at least 6 “. Apron flashing shall be soldered to the base flashings vertically and horizontally. Wrap apron flashing at corners a minimum of 4 “. For lead flashing in corner (4” reveal, 4” behind sidewall) of chimney and sidewall below overhang, install so lead runs above roof and under lead apron on roof above. Cut into chimney and secure behind sidewall.

Roofing Open up bulging area to expose deterioration. Remove existing roofing and rotten framing members, key in repairs where needed, reinforce as needed. Where structural members are not salvageable, carefully excise rotten sections of roof rafters. Replace rotten wood with dutchmen repairs. Replace damaged or deteriorated wood decking encountered with like material. Any replaced member shall span a minimum of three support members (rafters), unless decking material is tongue & groove-exposed from the underside, in which case the deteriorated member will span at least one truss width.
