About this file
This is a Statement of Work for procuring a MEMS-VCSEL laser system for the ESM Project at NASA Ames. The procurement is for one MEMS-VCSEL laser with an integrated balanced photodetector to be used for laser absorption spectroscopy in the Electric Arc Shock Tube (EAST) facility for conducting high-resolution spectral diagnostics.
The MEMS-VCSEL laser must meet the following specifications: sweep rate of at least 1 MHz, scan range greater than 30 nm (within -10dB of peak), central wavelength between 900-1300 nm with preference for 920-1040 nm or 1100-1200 nm, output power exceeding 10 mW, output duty cycle greater than 40%, and analog interferometer output. The balanced photodetector must have responsivity exceeding 0.5 A/W in the laser scan range, 3dB bandwidth of 1 GHz or greater, minimum bandwidth less than 50 kHz, common mode rejection greater than 20 dB, noise equivalent power less than 10 pW/Hz^1/2, and output noise less than 10 mV rms. Delivery is required 8 to 12 weeks after receipt of order to NASA Ames, with the item shipped in a container with appropriate protective material. The document recommends the Thorlabs model SLZ10002 as the product that satisfies these requirements, specifically requesting a unit with a central wavelength close to 1040 nm.

Statement of Work for Procuring: MEMS-VCSEL Laser
1. INTRODUCTION
The ESM Project performs spectral diagnostics in the Electric Arc Shock Tube (EAST) at NASA Ames. This procurement is for a high speed tuning laser that may be used to implement laser absorption spectroscopy in EAST. The MEMS-VCSEL laser allows very rapid tuning of a wide wavelength range which can be used to obtain absorption measurement over many spectral features with high resolution while still matching the high temporal variation in a shock tube facility like EAST.
2. SCOPE
The following item needs to be procured:
1 MEMS-VCSEL laser with balanced photodetector
The specification of the MEMS-VCSEL laser includes:
- Sweep rate >=1 MHz
- Scan range (within -10dB of peak) >30 nm
- Central wavelength should be between 900-1300 nm, with preference for laser frequencies that can tune into the range 920-1040 or 1100-1200 nm.
- Output power >10 mW
- Output duty cycle >40%
- Analog Interferometer output
The specification of the balanced photodetector includes:
- Responsivity in the laser scan range to exceed 0.5 A/W
- 3dB bandwidth of 1 GHz or greater
- Minimum bandwidth <50 kHz
- Common mode rejection >20 dB
- Minimum noise equivalent power less than 10 pW/Hz1/2
- Output noise <10 mV rms
Performance Period Delivery 8 to 12 weeks after receipt of order
Shipping Shipped in container with appropriate protective material mailto:Brett.A.Cruden@nasa.gov
Place of Performance Delivered to NASA Ames
Recommended Product/Vendor Thorlabs model SLZ10002 satisfies these requirements and includes an integrated balanced photodetector (https://www.thorlabs.com/item/SLZ1002). Based on their specification range, we should request a unit that has a central wavelength range close to 1040 nm.
