Specification for
WSTF Propulsion RF System
SCOPE: This specification establishes the requirements for an RF system to support operations in
WSTF’s 300 and 400 area Propulsion Test Office.
1.0 General Requirements
The RF systems in the 300 and 400 areas provide the primary communication method between all personnel involved in supporting test operations. The 300 and 400 area RF systems are independent from each other and communication between the two areas is not required. Communication between the existing Quintron hardwire system and the RF system, shall be capable.
1.1 System Compatibility 300 and 400 Areas
The intercom systems installed in the 300 and 400 areas will be fully compatible with each other, but not connected together. Individual components that comprise each system will be identical allowing component replacement from a common storage area for spare parts.
1.2 Communication Method
The propulsion RF system shall be full duplex. Communication will be conducted primarily using headsets which are connected to a wireless cellular base belt pack. A push-to-talk switch shall be provided on each headset with the capability for latching this switch in the “on” state. The new RF system cellular based belt packs shall have the capability to be integrated to the existing WSTF headsets. Current WSTF headsets use H series quick disconnect (QD) headsets and connect to devices with a 2.5mm headset jack.
1.3 Number of Channels
The existing Quintron hardwire system consist of eight channels. The new RF system shall have the capability to communicate with all eight hardwire system channels. The RF cellular based belt packs shall have a minimum of 4 channels communicating/monitoring at a given time, but it shall also have the capability to be programmed to have a maximum of 8 different channels or groups at a given time.
1.4 Number of Users per Channel
Each channel in a system will allow a minimum of 40 simultaneous users. All users will have full talk/listen capability at all times.
1.5 Antenna Operation
One active antenna shall support up to 5 cellular based belt packs. The system shall not drop out any of the 5 cellular based belt packs if an additional user comes within rage of the antenna coverage area. In this case the additional user shall be prevented from joining the group through that antenna. The antenna shall also be rated for IP 65 (water and dust resistance). There shall be an outdoor range of 800ft (line-of-sight) and a typical range of 300ft indoors. Turning the power “on” or “off” to any antenna shall not affect the operation of the rest of the system.
1.6 RF Wireless Headset Controls and Operation
The RF cellular based belt pack headsets shall have a belt mounted, battery operated transceiver to which a single headset will be connected. The transceiver shall have, as a minimum, a power switch with indication, channel selection method with indication, and a method for adjusting the volume level of the headset.
1.7 Power Requirements
A rechargeable battery pack shall power the headsets. The battery pack shall be capable of charging separately from the headset/belt pack transceiver. The wireless headset transceiver will be required to operate for a minimum of 18 hours on a freshly charged battery. The battery must be quickly swappable in the field to minimize communication disruption during test operations.
1.8 Antennas and Expansion Capabilities
The RF wireless portion shall consist of the necessary hardware to support up to five simultaneous users in each location. The total number of users supported on the wireless portion shall be a minimum of 40 in each of the 300 and 400 area systems. The proposed new RF system shall have a minimum of 10 antenna’s for the 300 area system and 15 antenna’s for the 400 area system. The proposed system shall have the capability to add additional antennas to expand coverage area.
2.0 Physical and Environmental Requirements
The communication coverage requirements of the 300 and 400 areas impose varying physical and environmental requirements on the equipment installed in the various locations in these areas. The replacement intercom system equipment, including the RF wireless equipment, shall meet these requirements as follows.
2.1 Outdoor Wall Mounted Stations
The operating temperature range for all outdoor stations shall be 0 to 120 degrees F.
2.2 Support Equipment
Equipment required such as control hardware, switching matrices, and power supplies will be installed in standard 19 inch racks located in the 300 and 400 area bunkers and in the block house basements. These racks and/or rack space shall be provided by WSTF.
3.0 Technical Requirements
The new RF system, as described in the document, will be a hybrid system consisting of a hard-wired digital backbone with multiple radio frequency links. This new system shall meet the following technical requirements.
3.1 RF Frequency and Power Level
The RF system shall operate in the 1.88~1.93 GHz communication frequency band. The communication between each headset and the base stations shall be digital, similar to current cellular based technology.
The peak RF power output of any transmitter in this system shall not exceed 100mW.
3.2 RF Audio Frequency Response
Audio frequency response shall be 300Hz-3kHz when communication between the 1.9 GHz cellular based belt packs. Also, the audio delay for the entire RF system shall be less than 90ms.
3.3 RF Signal to Noise Ratio
The signal to noise ratio of the system shall be greater than 52 dB.
3.4 RF Total Harmonic Distortion
The total harmonic distortion of the system, including all interfaces and RF links shall be less than 1% at 1kHz.
4.0 Installation Requirements
4.1 Installation Demo
Vendor shall demonstrate connection and operation with WSTF existing Quintron hardwire system.
4.2 System Cabling
All cabling between the intercom stations and the interface hardware will be 2-wire, 4-wire, or category 5 digital communication cabling or fiber optic for cable runs grater than 330ft. The existing cable shall be used (remove old system and attached the new hardware and existing conduits will be re-used where possible for new cabling. All new conduit runs will be installed by WSTF and any damaged conduit will be replaced by WSTF prior to installing the new cabling.
4.3 Code Requirements
The intercom system design shall comply with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA
496) Standards for installation in hazardous locations. All electrical equipment installations shall also comply with National Electrical Code Standards (NFPA 70).
4.4 System Drawings and Manuals
The vendor shall provide three sets of system drawings, operation manuals, maintenance manuals, and any software documentation required for system operation. The system drawings will include schematics of all vender supplied hardware with connection diagrams. WSTF will generate a final overall installation drawing.
5.0 System Verification and Acceptance
5.1 System verification and validation
System verification and validation tests will be performed following system installation. System functional tests will be performed to verify the hardware and/or software perform their functions and services according to specifications listed in this document.
5.2 Acceptance criteria
Acceptance criteria for the system shall consist of meeting all of the specifications listed in sections 1 through 4 of this document.
5.3 References
Vender must provide references that demonstrate satisfactory performance in the field of wireless communication for a minimum of 4 years (4 Year Warranty).
