Exploration Extra-Vehicular Mobility Unit (xEMU) Composite Manufacturing Services

Statement of Work

Sample Task Order 1: Composite Hard Upper Torso, Manufacturing Prototype (to be issued at contract award)

1. Purpose

The purpose of this statement of work (SOW) is to define the scope of work and deliverables associated with fabrication of the Composite Hard Upper Torso (CHUT) Manufacturing Prototype for the Exploration Extra-Vehicular Mobility Unit (xEMU) project.

2. Background:

The Crew and Thermal Systems Division’s Advanced Space Suit Team is developing a new Hard Upper Torso (HUT) and Hatch assembly that will be used in both micro-gravity and planetary EVA operations. The Space Suit Systems Branch is requesting support to fabricate and deliver a new composite Hard Upper Torso (HUT) and Hatch design.

NASA is investing in lightweight, damage tolerant composite material development, but this technology is not currently at a maturity level suitable for full component fabrication. The intent of this project is to limit the scope of the fabric options to fiberglass and focus on identifying the best resin system and manufacturing process to meet the system requirements.

3. Scope of Work:

The contractor shall develop a manufacturing plan based on the xEMU HUT and Hatch geometry, provided by NASA. The contractor shall conduct a structural analysis to prove that the HUT and hatch meets the requirements set forth in this statement of work. Based on the analysis, the design will be updated. A design review will be conducted to verify that the design meets the requirements.

After approval of the design a manufacturing prototype will be fabricated, and all deliverables will be sent to NASA. This manufacturing prototype will be tested by NASA to verify it meets the structural requirements.

4. Deliverables:

4.1 Suit Fabrication Deliverables:

4.1.1 The requested data ordered for delivery are as follows:

xEMU HUT and Hatch assembly, Model Files and Drawings (2 Sets, Draft and Final), which are defined as component and assembly level model files and drawings for all hardware requested for delivery and all tooling required to build and/or used for the delivered hardware. This set of data deliverables includes Contractor modified NASA model files and any other drawings, documentation and files necessary to redesign, modify, manufacture and/or test and verify the delivered hardware.

CAD Model files shall be solid native model files of .prt or .sldprt and .stp formats. Drawings shall be native in the “.drw” and “.pdf” format.

Compatible with Creo and Solidworks xEMU HUT and Hatch, Materials Usage and Identification List (2 Sets, Draft and

Final)Spreadsheet Format xEMU HUT and Hatch, Structural Analysis Report (2 Sets, Draft and Final) Report Format xEMU HUT and Hatch Manufacturing Instructions (2 Sets, Draft and Final)

Report Format This set of instructions includes all of the information needed to fabricate the HUT/Hatch, such as lay- up patterns, instructions for lay-up, cure process, travelers, etc.

xEMU HUT and Hatch Prototype Design Review Presentation Presentation Format

4.1.2 The requested hardware are as follows:

xEMU HUT and Hatch Assembly Manufacturing Prototype This hardware is intended to be a manufacturing prototype that can be used to validate the manufacturing plan and structural integrity of the design but is not intended to be used for manned testing.

xEMU HUT and Hatch Assembly Tooling

This tooling includes the hardware developed for the fabrication of the manufacturing prototype.

xEMU Composite NDI Standards Standards of the same thickness and materials as the HUT and Hatch composite structure with flaws induced of varying diameters and depths. These standards are used for NDI qualification of the hardware.

4.2 Prototype Design Review:

On a date identified by the contractor and agreed to by the Government, a design review will be held via telecom to review the design, manufacturing plan, and analysis and to communicate how the prototype design meets the requirements. Deliverables due at the design review include: a presentation which documents the design and rationale for meeting the requirements and a draft set of all other data deliverables identified in Section 4.1 (CAD Models, Manufacturing Instructions, Materials Usage and Identification List, and the Analysis Report, etc.). The deliverables shall be delivered one week prior to the meeting for review by NASA.

4.3 Monthly Status Report:

The contractor shall update NASA on the status of the fabrication on a monthly basis. The update will include a brief report on the latest activities and upcoming tasks. There will also be a brief telecom with NASA to review the monthly report and address any questions related to the monthly report.

5. Period of Performance / Schedule:

All deliverables shall be delivered by 9 months after Authority to Proceed (ATP.

6. Travel:

No travel expenses are required/included in this TO.
