1.0 INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND

The purpose of an Electrical Equipment Thermographic Survey is to find, localize and characterize electrical equipment deficiencies. Heat generated by poor electrical connections, loose wiring, faulty contacts, etc., is detected via infrared radiation which it emits in proportion to the amount of heat generated. The FLIR ThermaCam E4, used by Emprise Corporation in the completion of this survey, is a thermographic device which utilizes an uncooled Focal Plane Array (FPA) technology and special filters which are only sensitive to energy in the infrared spectrum. This device allows viewing of the equipment to be surveyed on a 3 inch LCD display. The actual temperatures are read directly from the calibrated images.

Anomalies can then be identified and actual temperatures quantified. Data is stored in a radiometric calibrated JPEG.

RESULTS

The results of the survey are presented in the form of thermograms of the image displayed by the FLIR ThermaCam E4. A corresponding natural light image of the area concerned is also presented beside the thermogram constituting a Thermographic Set. Red arrows point to the fault on both the thermogram and the natural light image so that a repair technician can positively localize the fault on board the ship.

Severity judgment, tempered with normal operational characteristics of the equipment, is assigned on the following scale:

Temperature Rise in 0F Recommendation

1.0 – 25.0 Low

25.1 – 50.0 Moderate

50.1 - 75.0 High

Above 75.1 Severe

Preceding the List of Discrepancies is a record of the electrical equipment inspected during the performance of the survey.

The last section of this report contains the thermographic sets accompanied by a detailed description of the problem, its location, fault and (if applicable) ambient temperatures, temperature rise, probable cause, and repair recommendation.
