RE: RFI in response to answer in RFI # 1
In the response to question 05 regarding the scope of work with Asbestos. One response regarding the number of locations of asbestos abatement the answer advised “The number of points whereby insulation is being removed from is clearly defined in the master schedule”.
In reviewing the master schedule to find which lines have insulation and which don’t, we find the information somewhat confusing. There is a column which indicates “Length of Hot Water Piping Not Insulated”.
All of the cold water lines indicate “None”, some of the hot water lines indicate a length in inches, some have “None” or “unknown”.
This column does not appear to address the cold water lines. Do the Cold Water lines not have any insulation on them?
VA RESPONSE: Correct, none of the cold water lines have insulation on them. Since the column is labeled “Length of Hot Water Piping Not Insulated” a more appropriate response in these blanks for cold water pipes would be NA or Not Applicable.
Are the lengths given on the hot water lines the length of pipe that isnt insulated? If it says none, does that mean there is no insulation present?
VA RESPONSE: The lengths listed for hot water lines is the amount of pipe that isn’t insulated at the end of the dead leg. If the entire dead leg is disposed of then the amount of insulation disposed of would be the length of the hot water dead leg minus the length of uninsulated pipe listed in the table. If the remediated pipe cannot remain in place. Hence maybe it falls from a penetration with insulation around it, then the hole left behind would need to be fire stopped. Refer to previous RFI responses if a long length of hot water pipe is cut and capped, it can remain in place rather than patching a hole and disposing of all the insulation. If a hot water pipe is labeled as “None” as referred to in this question, no insulation is present for disposal.
Please confirm if the lengths shown as “Not Insulated” in this column is the length of pipe the contractor is to install new insulation. If no, please confirm that the contractor is to only install new insulation only on sections that were removed by the contractor on active water lines.
VA RESPONSE: No, the contractor is only to install new insulation on sections of hot water pipe which were removed by the contractor and still active to facilitate the plumbing work. A piece of dead leg pipe left in place with insulation on it that was cut from the system is capped and the insulation encapsulated where cut.
