About this file
This document outlines a purchase description and related federal contract opportunity for an upgrade to an existing Nikon confocal microscope system. The National Institute of Mental Health seeks to acquire a Nikon A1R-HD25 resonant scanner, 4-channel detector with GaAsP and high sensitivity PMTs, 730nm laser unit, 40x silicone oil objective lens, and piezo stage insert to allow for faster image acquisition, imaging of longer wavelength dyes such as Cy7, and higher resolution imaging deeper into tissue samples. The contract would have a period of performance of one year for full warranty of all equipment and services, with equipment expected to be functional for over five years. Vendors must be able to deliver all items within 60-90 days of award. The primary point of contact for the sources sought notice is listed as the contracting specialist at the provided email address, with responses due by the notice publication date of April 17, 2020.

Version 11-30-2016-1 FAR Part 11—Describing Agency Needs
PURCHASE DESCRIPTION
1. Statement of Need and Purpose: The NIMH Systems Neuroscience Imaging Resource (SNIR) requires an upgrade of its existing Nikon confocal microscope system to ensure that it better meet the needs of users by acquiring high quality images much more quickly. The upgrade includes a new resonant scanner, 4 channel detector, 730nm laser, piezo stage, and silicone oil objective.
2. Background Information and Objective: Imaging brain sections using confocal microscopy is an essential step for experiments that are being carried out by many basic science investigators within the NIMH intramural program. The SNIR supports this by managing shared equipment used by multiple investigators. One of the microscopes managed by the SNIR is a Nikon system that has a relatively slow confocal scan head and a two-channel detector. Image acquisition takes a long time on this microscope which limits the work that can be done. The purpose of this acquisition is to upgrade the existing Nikon system so that acquisition is much faster, so that longer wavelength dyes such as Cy7 can be imaged, and so that high resolution can be obtained deeper into histological material. This will allow more users to collect data using it and for each user to collect better quality and more data.
