2.0 INTRODUCTION
NAVSEA has been faced with increasing demand for ship repair assets that are becoming increasingly harder and more expensive to obtain from the OEM. NAVSEA has tasked CNRMC and SERMC with restoring DLA condition F assets to DLA condition B in order to make these assets available to Mayport based ships. This tasking has created a need for SERMC to replace legacy CNC Machines with newer more capable CNC machines in order to meet the demand.
SERMC, C941 Inside Machine Shop, needs to replace legacy CNC machinery with multi axis, larger capacity, and more capable machinery. Repairing machinery assets requires the manufacturing of replacement parts that have excessive lead times or are no longer available from the OEM. Some of these replacement parts exceed the manufacturing limitation of SERMC’s CNC legacy machinery, which has been in service since 2002. The advances in computing power and processing technology in CNC machines available in 2024 will exceed the new manufacturing demands that have been placed on SERMC. SERMC’s legacy CNC machinery has reached the end of its life cycle, and requires replacement in order to meet the goal of NAVSEA.
