1.0 PROJECT DESCRIPTION / SUMMARY: The purpose of this project is to install a concrete pad and electrical utilities to support a climate-controlled seed storage unit.
2.0 OBJECTIVES:
Install concrete pad and underground electrical utilities to support a climate-controlled seed storage unit.
3.0 BACKGROUND:
The park purchased a climate-controlled seed storage unit scheduled for delivery on May 1, 2025. Properly storing seeds is essential for keeping them viable and ready for future planting.
One key factor in seed storage is the temperature of the environment. It is crucial to store seeds in a cool, dry place to prevent them from losing their viability.
4.0 SPECIFIC WORK / TASKS (NOT LISTED IN ORDER OF TASK):
a. Review site conditions with NPS staff, develop schedule and safety plan to perform work in a logical sequence to avoid negatively impacting staff access and providing safe areas for passage.
b. Provide all project submittals for NPS review and approval.
c. Verify location of utilities.
i. Pre-excavation Conference: Conduct conference at the Project site ot place designated by the contracting officer
d. Conduct layout with survey of site conditions and grades, review with CO and or COR for approval prior to construction.
e. Sub-base: 15’x23’x5”. Compacted ¾” Open-Graded Crushed Stone or Gravel.
f. Vapor Retarders: Polyethylene sheet, ASTM D 4397, not less than 10 mils (0.25 mm) thick.
i. Place, protect, and repair sheet vapor retarder according to ASTM E 1643 and manufacturer's written instructions. Lap joints 6 inches (150 mm) and seal with manufacturer's written instructions
g. Ready-Mixed Concrete:
i. Concrete placement shall not be performed when weather is expected to be at or below 40° F or exceed 95° F for proper curing of the concrete.
ii. Measure, batch, mix, and deliver concrete according to ASTM C 94/C 94M and
ASTM C 1116/C 1116] and furnish batch ticket information.
iii. Slab size: 14’x22’x6” at 5,000 psi.
iv. Protection & Curing.
1. General: Protect freshly placed concrete from premature drying and excessive cold or hot temperatures. Comply with ACI 306.1 for cold-weather protection and with ACI 301 (ACI 301M) for hot-weather protection during curing.
2. Evaporation Retarder: Apply evaporation retarder to concrete surfaces if hot, dry, or windy conditions cause moisture loss approaching 0.2 lb/sq. ft.
x h (1 kg/sq. m x h) before and during finishing operations. Apply according to manufacturer's written instructions after placing, screeding, and bull floating or darbying concrete but before float finishing
3. Curing Methods: Cure concrete for at least seven days by:
a. Curing and Sealing Compound: Clear, Waterborne Membrane-
Forming Curing and Sealing Compound: ASTM C 1315, Type 1, Class A. Apply uniformly to floors and slabs indicated in a continuous operation by power spray or roller according to manufacturer's written instructions.
v. Steel Reinforcement: #4 rebar, 12” OC. ASTM A 615/A 615M, Grade 60
(Grade 420), deformed.
1. Bar Supports: Bolsters, chairs, spacers, and other devices for spacing, supporting, and fastening reinforcing bars and welded wire reinforcement in place. Manufacture bar supports from steel wire, plastic, or precast concrete according to CRSI's "Manual of Standard Practice
2. Comply with CRSI's "Manual of Standard Practice" for fabricating, placing, and supporting reinforcement.
3. Do not cut or puncture vapor retarder. Repair damage and reseal vapor retarder before placing concrete.
vi. Joints: Contraction Joints in Slabs-on-Grade: Form weakened-plane [grooved] or
[sawed] contraction joints, sectioning concrete into areas as indicated:
1. Construct contraction joints for a depth equal to at least of 25% of the slab's thickness and placed no more than 8 to 12 feet apart as follows:
2. Grooved Joints: Form contraction joints after initial floating by grooving and finishing each edge of joint to a radius of 1/8 inch (3.2 mm). Repeat grooving of contraction joints after applying surface finishes. Eliminate groover tool marks on concrete surfaces.
3. Sawed Joints: Form contraction joints with power saws equipped with shatterproof abrasive or diamond-rimmed blades. Cut 1/8-inch- (3.2-mm-) wide joints into concrete when cutting action will not tear, abrade, or otherwise damage surface and before concrete develops random contraction cracks.
4. Joint-Filler Strips: To match concrete color and composed of any of the following:
a. Sponge rubber, flexible foam (polyethylene, polyurethane, polypropylene), self-expanding cork, and bituminous or resin impregnated cork or fiber board.
vii. Surface Finish: Float and Fine-Broom Finish: Apply a first trowel finish to surfaces. While concrete is still plastic, slightly scarify surface with a fine broom.
