RFQ No. 140P8418Q0029 FRP Bridge for Redwood National & State Parks
Att 1 ‐ STATEMENT OF WORK Revised April 10, 2018
I. Background:
| The | Bond | Creek | Bridge | site | is | located | in | Orick, | Humboldt | Co, | CA, | Redwood | National | Park. | ||||||||
| The | old | Bond | Creek | bridge | has | been | demolished | and | removed | from | the | site. | It | consisted | of | |||||||
| two | (2) | independent, | simply | supported | spans | of | unequal | length, | supported | on | three | (3) | ||||||||||
| concrete | abutments. | Span | No. | 1 | is | 4 | feet | wide | by | 63 | foot | long. | Span | No. | 2 | is | 4 | foot | wide | by | ||
| 20 | foot‐3 | inch | long. | The | original | deck | surface | was | all | the | same | finished | grade, | the | under | |||||||
| deck | structures | for | each | span | were | different | depths, | and | therefore | the | abutments | are | ||||||||||
| different | heights. | Span | No. | 1 | was | two | 6 | inch | wide | X | 2 | foot | deep | Glu‐lam | stringers. | Span | No. | |||||
| 2 | was | three | 4 | inch | wide | X | 12 | inch | deep | pressure | treated | lumber | stringers. | See | the | attached | ||||||
| sketches | for | the | existing | dimensions | of | the | abutments. | The | intention | of | this | bridge | is | to | be | |||||||
| used | for | pedestrian | crossing | and | occasional | use | for | heavy | motorized | trail | maintenance | |||||||||||
| equipment | access. | The | bridge | must | withstand | a | maximum | vehicle | dead | load | of | 10,000. |
| II. Description | of | work: | |||||||||||||||
| This | acquisition | shall | purchase | and | ship | two | replacement | bridge | substructures | pre‐ | |||||||
| engineered | and | pre‐fabricated | to | span | the | existing | abutments. | All | structural | systems | shall | ||||||
| be | below | the | decking | and | supported | on | the | abutments. | Decking | shall | be | the | same | level, | |||
| with | no | gap | greater | than | ½‐inch, | where | the | two | spans | adjoin. | Structural | components | shall | ||||
| be | made | of | pultruded | fiber | reinforced | plastic | (FRP) | components. | All | fasteners | and | ||||||
| hardware | shall | be | Hot | Dipped | Galvanized | and/or | Stainless | Steel. | Provide | 12 | inch | wide | |||||
| non‐slip, | heavy | duty | FRP | materials | for | decking | of | sufficient | thickness | to | meet | load | |||||
| requirements, | pre‐drilled | for | the | use | of | self‐tapping | screws | in | sufficient | number | and | ||||||
| placement | for | secure | attachment. | These | planks | will | have | ½” | gaps | in‐between | when | ||||||
| secured | to | the | sub‐structures | to | provide | for | water | run‐off | and | to | reduce | debris | |||||
| accumulation. | The | design | and | fabrication | shall | be | in | a | simple | manner | such | that | it | will | allow | ||
| disassembly | for | shipping, | and | allow | for | the | park | to | manually | manipulate | and | transport | |||||
| bridge | components | to | the | trail | bridge | site | for | re‐assembly | by | manual | labor | crews, | highline | ||||
| rigging | and | hand | tools. | No | component | shall | be | longer | than | 21 | feet, | for | both | Span | No. | 1 | and |
| Span | No. | 2, | so | as | to | accommodate | restrictive | terrain | and | allow | moving | components | by | ||||
| manual | labor | crews. | Engineering | design | shall | determine | the | means | and | methods | for | ||||||
| connection | to | the | existing | concrete | abutments. |
| This | work | does | NOT | include | posts | and | rails | and | associated | hardware. | However, | the | design | ||
| should | include | loading | calculations | to | support | the | handrail | connections | and | attachments | |||||
| on | the | structure | (200 | lbs. | at | 50 | inches | tall). | The | government | shall | furnish | materials | and | |
| install | the | handrails | and | posts. The | NPS | will | furnish | and | install | containment | structures | ||||
| for | gravel | and | soil | access | ramps | up | to | finished | deck | surface. |
| It | is | preferable | that | the | design | of | mounting | clips/connecting | components | to | attach | |
| structures | to | existing | concrete | footings, | utilize | existing | anchor | bolt | and | through | bolt | hole |
| locations. | (See | diagrams | of | dimensions | of | existing | concrete | footings | with | fastening | ||
| locations | and | dimensions | on | the | footings | designed | for | the | original | bridge | structures.) |
RFQ No. 140P8418Q0029 FRP Bridge for Redwood National & State Parks
| A. Engineering | Requirements | |||||||||||||
| Each | bridge | structure | shall | be | designed | and | stamped | by | a | professional | structural | |||
| engineer | registered | in | the | State | of | California. | Include | all | applicable | codes | and | |||
| design | criteria | (such | as, | not | limited | to | live | load, | dead | load, | wind | loads, | seismic | loads, |
etc.)
| B. Design | Criteria | |||||||||||||
| 1. Design | each | span | separately. | The | short | span | (Span | No. | 2) | shall | utilize | a | ||
| simply | supported | FRP | beam | system | (minimum | of | 3 | beams) | sufficient | to | carry | loads, | ||
| support | FRP | decking | system, | and | to | allow | for | the | attachment | of | a | park | installed | |
| removable | hand | rail | systems. | The | long | span | (Span | No. | 1) | shall | utilize | FRP | ||
| components | in | an | under‐deck | structure | comprised | of | open | web | or | “space | frame” | |||
| structural | assembly | or | similar, | to | allow | for | complete | breakdown | and | reassembly | at | |||
| the | bridge | site. | This | shall | be | designed | to | a | maximum | height | of | 4 | foot | above |
| bearing | locations | on | footings. |
The bridge must withstand a maximum vehicle dead load of 10,000 lbs.
Minimum design for vehicle load – 10,000 lbs.
Minimum design for pedestrian Live load – 85 PSF.
Deck width shall be 4 feet clear from edge to edge, inside hand railing assembly.
III. Submittals:
| A. Shop | Drawings: | ||||||||||||||
| Provide | shop | drawings | for | review | and | acceptance. | Provide | design | criteria, | ||||||
| component | dimensions, | layout, | assembly | instructions | and | PE | stamp. | ||||||||
| B. Spare | Parts: | ||||||||||||||
| Provide | (2) | sets | of | spare | parts | for | each | type | of | fastener | or | hardware | and | 2 | spare |
| deck | boards. |
