About this file

This is a Technical Manual for a Carrier Transicold Model 30HXS sea water-cooled marine screw chiller with 70 tons nominal cooling capacity, designed for the NOAA FRV40-226 research vessel. The manual provides comprehensive instructions for operation, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the Chill Water Plant Model 30HXS086R-140 manufactured by Halter Marine, Inc. under NOAA Contract 50-SPNA-1-00031.

The chiller system comprises two semi-hermetic twin screw compressors with R-134A refrigerant (76 lbs circuit A, 75 lbs circuit B), a shell and tube cooler with enhanced copper tubes, and marine condensers featuring cupro-nickel tubes and bronze water-boxes. Key operational specifications include 575-volt, 3-phase, 60-hertz main power and 115-volt, 1-phase control power. The cooler's liquid level is controlled by discharge superheat setting (17°F with 2°F delta) rather than physical float sensors due to vessel motion. Maximum water flow rates are 185 GPM for the cooler and 235 GPM for the condenser, with maximum condenser water velocity not exceeding 6 feet per second. The manual contains detailed technical data tables for physical specifications, electrical requirements across multiple voltage configurations, compressor electrical parameters, dimensional drawings with weight distribution at mounting points, and comprehensive wiring diagrams. The document includes sections on installation procedures covering shipment inspection, unit rigging and placement, piping connections, electrical connections, accessory installation, leak testing, and refrigerant charging, along with control startup procedures and troubleshooting guidance for the ComfortLink control system with Navigator Display Module interface.

SEA WATER COOLED MARINE SCREW CHILLER

INTRODUCTION

The Carrier Transicold model 30HXS sea water cooled screw chiller packaged units are standard Carrier model 30HXC086M chillers which have been modified for shipboard application. The modifications include:

Installation of marine condensers featuring cupro-nickel tubes and end tube sheets, bronze water-box.

Factory installed control voltage transformer (115v) in the above panel.

Cooler liquid level controlled by the discharge superheat. (see controller operation note)

NOTES

•Units are shipped with the proper Refrigerant and Oil charge.

Refrigerant charge – circuit A 76 lbs.

Refrigerant charge – circuit B 75 lbs.

•Drier cores are factory installed as a standard.

Data on the design parameters for this application is provided in the “Unit Performance Summary” while overall dimensions and modification component location views are provided in Section 2. A Refrigerant Pressure Temperature chart for R-134A is provided at the end of this section.

NOTE

Excess flow will cause rapid erosion of heat exchanger tubes, tube sheets, and heads. Measures are to be taken in the shipbuilder design of the water distribution system to maintain flows at design pressure drop (+/- 2%).

Main power for this unit is 575 volt, 3 phase, and 60 hertz. Control power is 115 volt, 1 phase, and 60 hertz. As with all marine equipment, the unit is to be installed with the compressor motor shaft fore and aft.

Maximum water flow in condenser is 235 GPM, (14.86 l/s). Maximum condenser water velocity is not to exceed 6 Ft./Sec.

Maximum water flow in cooler is 185 GPM, (11.67 l/s).

CONTROLLER OPERATION NOTE

The Cooler’s liquid level sensor thermistors have been disconnected due to pitch and roll of the ship. The liquid level is then automatically controlled by the discharge superheat setting, which is 17°F and has a Delta of 2°F. This setting improves the overall operation of the chiller plant and is done because movement is not found in a stationary application as on board ship. The setting can be found on the Navigator ALARM screen as ALERT codes T131 & T132.

NAVIGATOR DISPLAY MODULE

The Navigator Display Module is the human interface communication link with the microprocessor. The Navigator is a hand held keypad furnished with a coiled telephone style communication cable designed to provide a mobile user interface for entering and viewing system status and control information with the ComfortLink control system. The coiled cable is capable of extending up to 12 feet.

For additional information see catalog 533-008, Air-cooled and Fluid Cooled Chillers with ComfortLink Controls, Start-Up, Operation, Service and Troubleshooting, Page 16. Under Tab 3.
