REQUEST FOR INFORMATION (RFI) OFFICIAL RESPONSES
129JGP20R0013 - East Lights Road Improvement
RFI responses will be responded to as necessary in amendment format which will be posted to the solicitation via beta.SAM.
Telephone requests for information will not be accepted or returned.
RFI #1 – What vendor or company did the large culvert on East Lights Road Improvement project was quoted from? We have been having issues getting a quote from our normal resources on this specific culvert. From what we have gathered the engineer from one of our suppliers has concerns about the size of the pipe and the gauge as well.
USFS Response – As stated on Sheet G-01 (page 35 of 41), General Notes, Note #1, culvert is based on the catalog of products manufactured by Contech Engineering Solutions, multi-plate pipe-arch. The 168” x 116” pipe equates to the 14’ x 9’-8” culvert manufactured by the
Contech, and the Forest Service expects a multi-plate culvert pipe-arch for this installation.
According to the design manual, this pipe is designed to handle HL-93 loading, with a minimum cover of 24 inches, and maximum cover of 10 feet. According to the Contech Design
Manual, this culvert size comes in 10 gage, and is strong enough to handle the minimum and maximum pipe cover. Abrasion along the bottom of the culvert will be reduced by the streambed simulation required inside the culvert (with baffles), and thus 10 gage should be sufficient.
According to the Contech Design Manual, the corrugations for this pipe size are 6” x 2”. The drawings and schedule incorrectly identify the pipe corrugations as 5” x 1”, and this should be disregarded.
See attached document: “Revised Sheet G-01”
In order to be consistent with the pay item description shown in the schedule and on sheet G-
01 pay item 60202 in the schedule has had the verbiage altered as shown by the yellow highlights. No other changes were made.
