Tree Planting – PHOTOGRAPHIC IMAGES

Image 1 -- Example of Engelmann spruce 112 containerized seedling from 2014.

Root plug is about six-inches long and the top about six-inches tall.

Image 2 -- Example of installed tree shade card. Shade card consists of a 8” x 12” plastic mesh slipped over an 8” x 18” wire bail.

Image 3 – Typical ground condition in Schedule Item 1.10. 2017

Image 4 – Very rocky area. This is an example of an unplantable area adjacent to Unit 1.11. Unit 1.11 in the background has now been harvested. 9/28/2016

Image 5 – More common ground conditions in Schedule Item 1.10. 2017

Image 6 – Example of area with increasing sedge cover will need scalping. This area near Unit 1.11 was planted in 2017. 9/28/2016

Image 7 – Disturbed ground in typical of spruce planting units on Slumgullion Pass. This area was planted in 2017. 11/2/2015

Image 8 –Ground cover undisturbed by winter logging operation on snow. Litter and duff layer is commonly about one-inch deep in this area. Should be easy clearing and scalping. This area was planted in 2017. 11/2/2015

Image 9 –Patch of undisturbed young spruce which will not require planting due to tree spacing. A common condition in Schedule Item 1.10. 2017

Image 10 –Windthrown residual trees which will need to be worked through in Unit 1.10. 2017

Image 11 – Moderate sedge cover which will require scalping. This area was planted in 2017. 8/2/2016.

Image 12 – Example conditions range from scalping of sedge in the foreground, plantable spots in the skid trail, unplantable spots in deep woody debris, more areas requiring clearing and scalping, and unplantable patches beyond with adequate tree stocking. This area was planted in 2017. 8/2/2016.

Image 13 – Open skid trail with light layer of litter and duff. Note the presence of large rocks in the foreground. This area was planted in 2017. 8/2/2016.

Image 14 – Area with well disturbed soil in the foreground, then undisturbed patches beyond. This area was planted in 2017. 7/27/2016.

Image 15 – Wide skid trail which is plantable. Undisturbed areas often have acceptable advanced spruce and fir regeneration. Unit 1.10. 2017.

Image 16 – Undisturbed ground cover resulting from winter logging operation over snow. Planting spots will require moderate clearing and scalping. This area was planted in 2017. 9/27/2016.

Image 17 – Skid trail with areas if thick unplantable slash, but plantable spots occur where thick slash is intermittent. Bid Item 1.10. 2017.

Image 18 – Slash pile burn ash pit. Not suitable for tree planting. 6/25/2012.

Image 19 – Slash pile ash pit after treatment. Footprint is now suitable for tree planting. 9/28/2016.

Image 20 -- Fine woody debris mat at log landing which is not suitable for tree planting. These mats are often over a foot thick. The slash pile ash pit and the collar of woody debris which have not been rehabilitated are not suitable planting locations.

Image 21 – Example of good advanced Engelmann spruce seedling. Planting spot is occupied, so space off these trees the appropriate distance to plant (9-feet, 10-feet, or 11-feet depending on planting unit). Unit 1.10. 2017.

Image 22 – Re-contoured road switchback example. This area was planted in 2017. 8/2/2016.
