Job Sheet –Tree/Shrub Establishment (612) Revised March 2017
Tree/Shrub Establishment Conservation Practice Job Sheet VT-612
Definition Establishing woody plants by planting seedlings, cuttings, direct seeding or natural regeneration.
Purpose To establish woody plants for forest products, wildlife habitat, long-term erosion control and improvement of water quality, treat waste, reduction of air pollution, sequestration of carbon, energy conservation, to maintain or restore natural genetic diversity and enhance aesthetics.
Where used Establish trees/shrubs on any area where woody plants can be grown.
Operation and maintenance Access by vehicles or equipment during or after tree/ shrub establishment shall be controlled to protect new plants and minimize erosion, compaction and other site impacts. Refer to the standard Access Control (472).
The trees and shrubs will be inspected periodically and protected from adverse impacts including insects, diseases or competing vegetation, fire and damage from livestock or wildlife.
If needed, competing vegetation will be controlled until the woody plants are established.
Noxious weeds will be controlled.Replanting will be required when survival is inadequate.
Supplemental water will be provided as needed.
Criteria Composition of species will be adapted to site conditions and suitable for the planned purpose(s).
Priority will be given to plant materials grown from locally collected seeds.
No plants on the Federal or state noxious or invasive weeds list shall be planted.
Planting or seeding rates will be adequate to accomplish the planned purpose for the site.
Planting dates, and care in handling and planting of the seed, cuttings or seedlings will ensure that planted materials have an acceptable rate of survival.
Bare-root stock shall be planted during the dormant season in the spring after the ground thaws until May 30 as soil moisture and local weather conditions permit.
Only viable, high-quality and adapted planting stock or seed will be used.
A precondition for tree/shrub establishment is appropriately prepared sites. Refer to practice standard Tree/Shrub Site Preparation (490).
Adequate seed sources or advanced reproduction needs to be present or provided for when using natural regeneration to establish a stand.
Specifications Requirements for the site are found within this jobsheet.
See practice standard and Supplemental Specifications for Tree/Shrub Establishment, code 612 and Forest Site Preparation, code 490 for specific requirements.

Temporary Storage and Handling Instructions (Refer to VT Standard and Specification 612) Planting stock that is dormant may be stored temporarily in a cooler or cool, moist, darkened area up to 3 days. For more than 3 days or for stock that is expected to begin growth before planting, dig a V-shaped trench (heeling-in-bed) sufficiently deep and bury seedlings so that all roots are covered by soil. Pack the soil firmly and water thoroughly. During planting, keep plant material out of direct sun or covered to avoid drying. Be sure to keep roots moist. Additional requirements:
Site Preparation See VT Standard and Specification and Job Sheet 490 – Forest Site Preparation Remove weeds and grass prior to planting and keep out for at least two years.
Additional requirements or special site preparation instructions:
Planting Method (Refer to VT Standard and Specification 612) Hand Machine (circle and indicate amount) For container and bareroot stock, plant stock to a depth even with the root collar in holes deep and wide enough to fully extend the roots. Pack the soil firmly around each plant. Cuttings are inserted in moist soil with at least 2 to 3 buds showing above ground.
Plants will be established prior to May 30 unless containerized seedlings are used or plants will be watered.
Additional requirements or special planting instructions/arrangements:
Cultural Practices (Refer to VT Standard and Specification 612 for specific requirements)
Pest Management is required. Weed control is necessary, either by mechanical cutting, herbiciding or mulching for at least 2 years after planting.

Additional requirements:
Operation and Maintenance The planted area must be inspected periodically and protected from damage so proper function is maintained. Replace dead or dying tree/shrub stock to provide adequate plant densities as described in the 612 standard and continue control of competing vegetation to allow proper establishment for at least 2 years. Periodic harvesting of trees and shrubs may be necessary to maintain the health and vigor of mature stands. Keep large dead and dying trees for cavity nesting birds and a source of large wood in aquatic habitats. Additional requirements:
Questions regarding the planting or maintenance of the tree/shrub establishment should be directed to , at .
