The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) received a $2,075,000 Project Grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) under the Primary Care Training and Enhancement (PCTE) federal grant program (CFDA 93.884). The 5-year grant, effective July 1, 2024, will support the Physician Assistant Curriculum for Addressing Rural Mental Health Education & Support (PA-CARES) program.
The PA-CARES program aims to increase the number of physician assistant (PA) students providing primary care services in rural and medically underserved communities in South Carolina. Key elements of the program include enhanced curriculum in medication for opioid use disorders, experiential learning modules for behavioral health assessments and interventions, and access to tele-mentoring with expert clinicians. The program will also incorporate culturally sensitive care training to align with national CLAS standards. Upon graduation, the PA students have a history of returning to serve in medically underserved areas, with nearly 70% doing so over the past two years.
