The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center (UNM HSC) was awarded a $127,460 five-year Project Grant (FY 2024-2029) from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) Biomedical Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.859). The grant will transform UNM's current MD/PhD program into a Leading Equity and Diversity in the Medical Scientist Training Program (UNM LEAD MSTP). Key objectives include:

  1. Recruiting more students from underrepresented groups to better reflect the regional demographics, with a goal of a student body that is at least 55% Hispanic and 10% American Indian/Alaska Native.

  2. Incorporating training in innovation and entrepreneurship to enhance the translational research ecosystem.

  3. Providing rigorous clinical training combined with exceptional predoctoral research opportunities.

  4. Supporting and retaining >90% of matriculated students through program completion.

  5. Expanding alumni engagement to support graduates' transition to independent investigator roles.

The grant will build on UNM HSC's existing strengths in biomedical sciences, health equity, bioengineering, and computational sciences to develop a diverse cohort of clinician scientists prepared to address translational research and health equity challenges.
