The National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded a $3,045,502 Project Grant to the Regents of the University of Michigan on August 18, 2022 under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853). The grant funds the development of optical neural motes to enable high-density neural recording through intact dura in nonhuman primates. Specifically, the University of Michigan will design infrared-powered, hermetically sealed motes less than 250 micrometers in width for implantation of up to 1,000 devices across multiple square centimeters of primate cortex. Carbon fiber electrodes no larger than neurons will penetrate the brain to record single-unit activity with minimal tissue damage. Imperial College London and the University of Delaware will support circuit and optical component design through subawards totaling approximately $500k. If successful, this technology could standardize wireless recording of thousands of neural signals in nonhuman primate neuroscience research with potential to revolutionize understanding of primate brain function.
