This $4.385 million project grant from the National Institutes of Health's National Institute on Aging will fund research into digital detection of social isolation and loneliness markers of risk for Alzheimer's disease. The University of California, San Diego will collect data from 128 cognitively normal older adults divided into high- and low-risk groups based on cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers and subtle cognitive decline markers. Researchers will administer in-lab standard measures as well as ecological momentary assessment, GPS tracking, and passive social interaction data collection to quantify social isolation, loneliness, and social cognitive biases in real time. They will compare high- and low-risk groups on these digital measures and biomarkers, and examine relationships between digital social measures, biomarkers, and in-lab assessments. The goals are to demonstrate digital measures can differentiate risk levels, associate with known AD biomarkers, and link to modifiable social cognition. Insights will inform future research on real-world social processes and aging. The award period is September 15, 2022 through August 31, 2025 under the National Institute on Aging's Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866).
