Project Grant R61NS150137
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded the University of Virginia $565,250 on September 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to investigate microglial mechanisms in status epilepticus recovery. The research tests two hypotheses on how microglia facilitate seizure termination and recovery from prolonged seizures. Aim 1 investigates the role of microglial P2RY12 receptor inhibition of...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded the University of Virginia $444,125 on June 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to investigate mechanisms and treatments for post-stroke seizures and epilepsy using a murine model. The work spans two aims. Aim 1 tests the effects of post-stroke argathroban (a direct thrombin inhibitor) and levetiracetam (an anti-epilepsy drug) on ameliorating early...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, part of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded Emory University $420,142 on May 4, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to explore the contribution of extracellular vesicles to epileptogenesis in temporal lobe epilepsy and Dravet syndrome. The research examines how extracellular vesicles—small membranous particles...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, part of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded the University of California, Davis $548,368 on February 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853, Assistance Listing designation). The project, "Slow-Wave Sleep Enhancement to Treat Epilepsy and Its Comorbidities" (R01NS147124), addresses the hypothesis that...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Vanderbilt University Medical Center $688,785 on September 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to investigate arousal network dysfunction in temporal lobe epilepsy. The research examines how recurrent consciousness-impairing focal seizures in temporal lobe epilepsy patients affect subcortical arousal networks and contribute to long-term...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center $1.614 million on September 11, 2025, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to conduct basic research on epileptogenesis mechanisms in mtoropathies and develop AAV-mediated gene therapy approaches for intractable epilepsy caused by mTOR pathway mutations. The research leverages newly developed mouse models of...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) awarded The Leland Stanford Junior University $614,510 on September 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to investigate seizure-induced myelin plasticity as a mechanism of generalized epilepsy progression. The research tests the hypothesis that seizure-induced myelination in the corpus callosum promotes cortical hypersynchrony and generalized...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Duke University $555,895 on July 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to investigate the biophysical mechanisms of temporal interference stimulation on epileptic discharges in the human brain. The research, conducted at the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, will leverage stereo-electroencephalography...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded $236,250 to the University of California, Los Angeles on February 3, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to investigate deficits in behavioral time-scale plasticity underlying cognitive representation imprecision and instability in temporal lobe epilepsy. The research examines how behavioral time-scale plasticity—a mechanism for generating...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Baylor College of Medicine $100,228 on September 30, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to develop optimized neurostimulation patterns for seizure control in drug-resistant epilepsy. The recipient will design and validate a novel platform combining high-entropy stimulus generation and deep learning to optimize complex pulse sequences with...
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded the University of Virginia $459,143 on September 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to develop and validate a mouse model of temporal lobe epilepsy suitable for drug screening. The funded work addresses the lack of animal models amenable to pharmaceutical testing for temporal lobe epilepsy, a debilitating disorder affecting millions worldwide. The project will test different mouse strains using pilocarpine treatment guided by pharmacokinetic modeling to identify strains that generate seizure frequencies suitable for drug testing, defined as less than 30 percent mortality from pilocarpine treatment, greater than 2 seizures per day over a four-week period, and fewer than 30 percent seizure-free days. The recipient will also test whether epileptic mice generated through this approach respond to currently available antiseizure drugs, conducting drug testing at the University of Utah through the NIH-sponsored Epilepsy Therapy Screening Program. The award runs from September 1, 2026, through August 31, 2028, with work performed in Charlottesville, Virginia.
