The University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc. (UGA Research Foundation) was awarded a $392,710 Project Grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855). The goal of this 3-year research project is to establish continuous, high-yield culture systems for the malaria parasite Plasmodium vivax (P. vivax) to enable the study of its biology and the development of new therapies. The research aims to (1) identify P. vivax strains that can robustly invade reticulocytes in culture and (2) optimize in vitro culture conditions by mimicking the bone marrow microenvironment where P. vivax thrives. Achieving a continuous P. vivax culture system is expected to provide essential tools for mechanistic research to inform the development of new treatments for this significant global health challenge.
