Project Grant R56DC023288
- The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders awarded Duke University $547,650 on July 2, 2026, under the Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders program (CFDA 93.173) to develop a predictive model of discourse production in right hemisphere stroke survivors with language use impairments. The research characterizes discourse-level language use in right hemisphere stroke (RHD) survivors using RHDBank, an internationally shared multimedia database, and...
- The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders awarded the University of Pittsburgh $664,448 on September 1, 2026, under the Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders program (CFDA 93.173). The award funds investigation of how heterogeneous neural responses in auditory cortex and secondary motor cortex contribute to auditory learning and perception. The project combines large-scale neural recordings with optogenetic manipulations to examine how local auditory...
- The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders awarded Vanderbilt University Medical Center $158,696 on December 31, 2026, under the Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders program (CFDA 93.173) to identify genetic biomarkers of central auditory structures that predict individual cochlear implant outcomes in adults with moderate to profound hearing loss. The fellowship research addresses the gap that 80 percent of variance in speech recognition outcomes...
- The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders awarded The Johns Hopkins University $194,270 on May 11, 2026, under the Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders program (CFDA 93.173) to investigate the development of auditory thalamocortical circuits and how they are altered in cases of congenital deafness. The project will establish a foundational understanding of how the thalamus and auditory cortex develop and mature through sensory experience, with...
- The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) awarded the University of Illinois $139,102 on July 10, 2026, under the Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders program (CFDA 93.173) to facilitate spoken morphology development in children who are deaf or hard of hearing. The award funds research examining factors that facilitate morphology learning in deaf and hard-of-hearing children using artificial grammar learning paradigms (Aims 1 and 2) and...
- The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders awarded New York University $381,376 on September 1, 2026, under the Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders program (CFDA 93.173). The award funds experimental and computational investigation of synaptic plasticity rules engaged in auditory cortex development and learning. The research generates datasets on fundamental plasticity processes during critical developmental periods, comparing spike-timing-dependent...
- The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders awarded the University of Wisconsin - Madison $1,166,250 on September 16, 2025, under the Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders program (CFDA 93.173) to investigate cortical population coding and network effects of cochlear implant stimulation during behavioral tasks. The research addresses gaps in understanding why cochlear implant outcomes vary significantly among users, despite over one million people...
- The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders awarded Vanderbilt University Medical Center $136,911 on February 15, 2026, under the Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders program (CFDA 93.173) to conduct a clinical trial feasibility study characterizing cognitive-linguistic and auditory processing profiles in adult cochlear implant recipients with poor speech recognition outcomes and to determine the feasibility of auditory and cognitive intervention...
- The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders awarded the University of South Florida $164,329 on September 16, 2025, under the Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders program (CFDA 93.173) to conduct parallel human and animal studies examining associations between extended high frequency hearing loss, speech-in-noise performance, and cognitive decline in aging populations. The funded research encompasses two coordinated aims. Aim 1 involves assessment...
- The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders awarded the University of Rochester $184,670 on August 17, 2026, under the Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders program (CFDA 93.173) to characterize multimodal language input and development in deafblind children through June 30, 2029. The research examines how the quantity and quality of linguistic input predict language outcomes in deafblind children, who have reduced access to both auditory and visual...
The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders awarded Vanderbilt University Medical Center $232,750 on September 1, 2026, under the Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders program (CFDA 93.173) to evaluate genetic risk for rhythm impairment as a predictor of language development across the lifespan. The recipient will conduct retrospective, longitudinal, and targeted follow-up studies using interdisciplinary methodologies from communication sciences and disorders, music science, and genomics. The work operationalizes shared genetic risk for rhythm and language impairments as an innovative predictor, evaluating genetic risk for rhythm impairment as a predictor of childhood histories of language-related disorders, developmental trajectories and outcomes for language in childhood, and as a proof of concept for future screeners for language-related impairments. The project responds to PAR-25-112, Advancement and Innovation in Measurement of Language Development and Predictors, within the NIH's Tackling Acquisition of Language in Kids (TALK) Initiative. The recipient will continue community engagement efforts through involvement in local public science communication initiatives and international consortia activities. Performance occurs at Forest Hills, Tennessee. The project period runs through August 31, 2027. This is a Project Grant, the largest category of NIDCD research funding, supporting direct costs of research including salaries, equipment, supplies, and travel, as well as indirect costs to the sponsoring institution.
