Pavaj Vascular is engineering a therapy using poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) nanoparticles encapsulated with calcitriol—the...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded The Research Foundation For The State University of New York $740,447 on August 20, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to engineer self-healing, tissue-engineered vascular grafts for use as arteriovenous shunts in hemodialysis patients. The award funds development of self-healing tissue-engineered vessels (SH-TEVs) designed to withstand repeated needle cannulation while maintaining mechanical strength and...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Angiotensin Therapeutics Inc. $591,488 on September 15, 2025, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847). Angiotensin Therapeutics will conduct preclinical research evaluating AGT001, a bioengineered soluble angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) variant, as a potential therapeutic for scleroderma kidney (SK), a rare but severe complication of systemic sclerosis...
- The National Institutes of Health National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded Anova Biomedical, Inc. $345,938 on September 1, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to develop compliant and degradable peripheral vascular grafts for small-artery bypass procedures. Anova is refining fabrication techniques for NovaGraft, a vascular bypass graft made from a novel, fully degradable elastomer designed to match the mechanical properties of native arteries. The work...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Angiotensin Therapeutics Inc. $314,355 on September 15, 2025, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to develop a bioengineered soluble ACE2 protein therapeutic for delayed graft function in kidney transplantation. Delayed graft function affects up to 50 percent of deceased-donor kidney transplant recipients and is caused by acute proximal tubular injury from...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Microvascular Tissues, Inc., $700,000 on September 17, 2025, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to evaluate the effect of a local microvascular tissue graft treatment in rat models of diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Microvascular Tissues, Inc., will conduct preclinical research on MVASC, a novel human structural allograft consisting of lyophilized and...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded $775,114 to the Research Institute At Nationwide Children's Hospital on June 12, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to conduct preclinical evaluation of a cell-free tissue-engineered vascular graft designed for congenital heart surgery. The research addresses complications arising from prosthetic biomaterials currently used in surgical repair of complex congenital cardiac anomalies, including thromboembolic...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Yale University $126,000 on August 15, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to identify vascular biomarkers and tissue signatures that predict cardiovascular risk in kidney transplant recipients. The project investigates whether early vascular biomarker trajectories and tissue expression patterns identify kidney transplant recipients at highest risk of...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded the University of California, Davis $1,608,986 on June 9, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to conduct research on angiogenesis and vascularization for bioengineered bladder wall regeneration and replacement. The research addresses surgical complications in patients with neuropathic bladder from spina bifida or spinal cord injury who currently undergo...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded Yale University $688,062 on September 1, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to develop tissue-engineered arteriovenous grafts from human induced pluripotent stem cells for hemodialysis vascular access in end-stage renal disease patients. The project addresses the clinical failure of current synthetic arteriovenous grafts, which suffer thrombosis, neointimal hyperplasia, infection, and aneurysm due to...
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Angiograft LLC $314,081 on September 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to develop acellular tissue-engineered vascular grafts (ATEVs) for dialysis access applications. Angiograft will establish the feasibility of engineered collagen-based ATEV grafts constructed from small intestinal submucosa functionalized with cross-linked heparin by testing them in an arteriovenous ovine model as arteriovenous shunts. The ATEV technology is designed to remodel within the host to resemble native vessel-like structure and function, eliminating the need for reinterventions. Upon successful completion, ATEVs could serve as a one-time surgical solution for hemodialysis access and potentially expand to applications including coronary artery bypass grafting, congenital heart disease, and peripheral arterial disease. Work is performed in Buffalo, New York with a period of performance through June 30, 2028. The assistance type is a Project Grant, which supports research activities to improve understanding of disease mechanisms and lead to improved prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of kidney and related diseases.
