This Project Grant awarded by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) under the Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders program (CFDA 93.173) provides $277,810 to Femtovox Incorporated to develop an image-guided automated ultrafast laser device for laryngeal surgery. The goals are to improve clinical outcomes, treatment efficiencies, and patient throughput compared to current surgical techniques using scalpels or traditional lasers. Key project objectives include demonstrating the superior performance of ultrafast lasers in minimizing collateral damage to laryngeal tissue, characterizing laser-based coagulation, and enabling subsurface tissue excisions - capabilities that could revolutionize laryngeal surgery. The project aims to address limitations of existing solutions that lack automation, cause more tissue damage, and pose higher risks like setting patients' airways on fire. Completion of the Phase I research objectives is intended to advance the technology towards in vivo animal studies in a future Phase II effort.
