Project Grant R43AI197306
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Yale University $503,876 on June 12, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to investigate cell-intrinsic immunomodulators as molecular adjuvants for next-generation self-amplifying RNA (saRNA) vaccines. The research addresses limitations of current mRNA-LNP vaccines by developing saRNA-mediated co-expression of vaccine antigens with cell-intrinsic immunomodulators from a single RNA...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded the Scripps Research Institute $3.679 million on August 5, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to develop self-assembling protein nanoparticles presenting stabilized hemagglutinin, neuraminidase, and M2E antigens for universal influenza vaccine development. The research addresses the structural and immunological challenges of creating a vaccine effective against both seasonal and pandemic...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded $314,363 to Keylicon Biosciences Inc. on July 20, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to develop a multivalent self-amplifying RNA (SARNA) vaccine against Lyme disease. The recipient will develop a SARNA vaccine encoding Borrelia antigens derived from diverse species to provide broad protection against Lyme disease, the most common vector-borne illness in North America. The vaccine...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Via Therapeutics, LLC, $314,363 on September 11, 2025, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to develop a microneedle-based mRNA flu vaccine for transcutaneous immunization. Via Therapeutics will design an influenza virus hemagglutinin mRNA vaccine candidate using the company's proprietary thin-film freeze-drying technology and evaluate hemagglutinin-specific immune responses in a mouse model....
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded The General Hospital Corporation (Massachusetts General Hospital) $661,313 on February 6, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to support development of a pan-influenza A vaccine. The research, led by Dr. Daniel Lingwood at the Ragon Institute of MGH, MIT and Harvard, focuses on elicitation of broadly neutralizing antibodies that protect against all influenza A viruses by triggering...
- Viva Viral Vaccines, Inc. received a $299,968 Project Grant award from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855), effective September 25, 2025, through August 31, 2026. The project is being conducted in Ithaca, New York. The award funds development of a broad-spectrum, multivalent vaccine platform targeting influenza neuraminidase (NA) protein that addresses critical limitations in current...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded $721,365 to the University of California Irvine on April 1, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to develop a single-dose influenza vaccine platform that extends immune response breadth against viral variants. The funded research combines nanoparticles presenting H5 hemagglutinin antigen with thermo-responsive polymer depots that release antigen slowly, extending exposure time to elicit...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Georgia State University Research Foundation Inc. $197,500 on April 22, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to investigate cross-protective immune mechanisms of combined mRNA and conventional influenza vaccines. The research develops new mRNA vaccine constructs encoding neuraminidase conjugated to a conserved M2E repeat, designed to enhance broad cross-protection against different...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Duke University $695,041 on August 3, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to investigate mechanisms underlying combination adjuvant-driven improvement of influenza vaccine responses. The research defines the innate immune signatures and adaptive immune responses elicited by existing and novel combination adjuvants as they relate to driving immune responses directed against influenza virus...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Georgia State University Research Foundation Inc. $197,552 on August 7, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to develop a novel nanoplatform for nasal universal influenza vaccines. The project addresses limitations in current cross-protective influenza vaccines by creating a nasal delivery system using nanosized extracellular vesicles (EVs) that display inverted hemagglutinin (HA)...
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Keylicon Biosciences Inc. $314,363 on August 1, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to develop a low-dose multivalent self-amplifying RNA (saRNA) influenza vaccine. Keylicon will engineer a saRNA construct encoding four World Health Organization-recommended influenza antigens and design modified nucleotide formulations to enhance antigen production while suppressing innate immune activation. The vaccine platform combines sequence-optimized saRNA vectors with lipid nanoparticle delivery to achieve protection at doses substantially lower than conventional RNA vaccines. Prior work demonstrated that modified cytidines (5-methylcytidine, 5-hydroxymethylcytidine, and 5-methyluridine) enable prolonged antigen expression while reducing type I interferon responses and systemic inflammation. Performance occurs in Dorchester, Massachusetts, with a period of performance from August 1, 2026, through July 31, 2027. This is a Phase I Small Business Innovation Research grant, the first stage in assessing scientific and technical merit, feasibility, and commercial potential before potential Phase II expansion.
