Project Grant R43AI191983
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded The Regents of the University of California, San Francisco $171,296 on February 3, 2027, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to develop methods for augmenting bacteriophages to improve their efficacy against Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections. The funded research will develop methods to express soluble effectors during bacteriophage infection that degrade Pseudomonas' protective biofilm upon...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Baylor College of Medicine $2.361 million on June 15, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to develop microbiome-based strategies for preventing and treating bacterial infections resistant to antibiotics at mucosal surfaces. The project, titled "Advancing Multimodal Biologics to Combat Antibiotic Resistance at Mucosal Surfaces," encompasses four research projects supported by two...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded the University of Pittsburgh $437,250 on February 4, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to develop and evaluate a rationally designed bacteriophage cocktail targeting multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections. The funded work assembles and systematically evaluates a multi-phage cocktail designed to target diverse MDR P. aeruginosa clinical isolates collected from 28 medical...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded J. Craig Venter Institute, Inc. $529,490 on June 10, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to engineer a temperate Burkholderia cepacia complex bacteriophage for therapeutic use. The recipient will engineer a prophage designated BCC02, isolated from Burkholderia genomic material, to disable its ability to integrate into bacterial genomes and increase its therapeutic range against bacteria...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia $448,292 on July 16, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to investigate the role of ceftazidime-avibactam in combination with meropenem in the prevention and treatment of mutant KPC-producing infections using a hollow fiber infection model. KPC-producing Enterobacterales infections carry mortality rates upwards of 40 percent....
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded The University Corporation $147,500 on September 1, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to conduct a multi-scale study of antimicrobial peptide action in non-standard bacterial growth states. The project addresses how antimicrobial peptides (AMPs)—immune-derived molecules that kill bacteria by disrupting membranes and modulate host immune responses—perform under physiologically relevant...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Northeastern University $261,675 on July 17, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to conduct exploratory research on streptothricin derivatization against gram-negative ESKAPE pathogens. The research explores synthetic modification of the gulosamine sugar moiety of streptothricins—antibiotics discovered over 70 years ago that inhibit bacterial protein translation. Preliminary data...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded The Regents of the University of California, San Francisco $673,851 on August 10, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to develop broad-spectrum inhibitors of serine and metallo carbapenemases targeting ESKAPE pathogens. The recipient will optimize a novel family of cross-class carbapenemase inhibitors to nominate one or more development candidates ready for IND-enabling studies. The...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Colorado State University $423,500 on September 1, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to investigate bacteriophage interactions with nontuberculous mycobacteria in mammalian cell intracellular environments. The research addresses the therapeutic use of bacteriophages—naturally occurring viruses that infect and kill bacteria—as an alternative treatment for drug-resistant nontuberculous...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Georgia TECH Research Corp $149,190 on January 23, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to investigate R-pyocins as a therapeutic approach to treat high-risk, multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa wound infections. The project addresses the rising prevalence of multidrug-resistant and extensively drug-resistant P. aeruginosa strains that cause acute and chronic infections from...
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded $306,484 to Paralos Bioscience Inc. on August 10, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to develop a safer, more effective polymyxin B formulation for treatment of multidrug-resistant E. coli infection. Paralos Bioscience is engineering a recombinant non-infectious bacteriophage that binds a conserved antigen on gram-negative bacterial cells and carries thousands of polymyxin B molecules conjugated to each phage virion. This "PMB-phage" delivery system reduces the minimum inhibitory concentration of polymyxin B by two orders of magnitude, allowing lower antibiotic doses that produce less nephrotoxicity while potentially expanding susceptibility to polymyxin B-resistant strains. Preliminary mouse infection model data supports the hypothesis that increased potency will lower toxicity exposure and clinical adverse effects in treating serious E. coli infections including community-acquired urinary tract infections, intra-abdominal infections, and sepsis. Work is performed in Los Angeles, California with a period of performance through July 30, 2028. The award is a Project Grant assistance type.
