The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) awarded a $388,750 Project Grant under the Biomedical Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.859) to The University of Iowa. The grant, effective January 1, 2025 and running through November 30, 2029, will support research to systematically characterize RNA-RNA interactions and the role of the RNA-binding protein Hfq in coordinating post-transcriptional regulatory networks in the bacterial pathogen Acinetobacter baumannii. This work aims to enhance the understanding of how A. baumannii, a significant cause of antibiotic-resistant hospital-acquired infections, regulates gene expression in the context of human disease. The research leverages genome-wide sequencing approaches and classical bacterial genetics techniques to generate and test hypotheses about novel regulatory mechanisms involving small RNAs and RNA-binding proteins in this important human pathogen.
