The University of Miami Office of Research Administration - School of Medicine Division received a $351,750 project grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) Biomedical Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.859) to investigate the use of chondroitin sulfate (CS) biomaterials to reprogram inflammatory immune states and support the resolution of chronic inflammation and tissue repair. Over the next 5 years, the project will evaluate nanoscale and microscale CS biomaterials through in vitro studies and translational mouse models of spinal cord injury and chronic skin wounds. The goal is to identify strategies that leverage CS presentation to modulate immune cell phenotypes and cytokine signaling in order to resolve excess inflammation and promote regenerative healing. This research aims to develop therapeutic approaches to address the lack of effective treatment options for chronic, non-healing wounds and the secondary tissue damage associated with traumatic injuries.
