The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) received a $677,589 Project Grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Trans-NIH Research Support program (CFDA 93.310) to adapt and pilot a novel HIV prevention program called "Fit for PrEP (F4P)" that aims to link incarcerated women to post-release pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) services. The F4P program will leverage an existing "Formerly Incarcerated Transitions" (FIT) program infrastructure to provide PrEP education, social support, and linkage to healthcare for high-risk African American women recently released from incarceration. UNC-CH will refine the F4P intervention through stakeholder feedback and then conduct a pilot randomized trial to assess the program's acceptability, feasibility, and preliminary impact on PrEP initiation. North Carolina A&T State University will lead the qualitative research design and implementation as a sub-grantee. This project seeks to address barriers to PrEP access and usage among a socially and economically marginalized population to ultimately reduce HIV disparities.
