The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Office of Research Administration was awarded a $236,250 Project Grant (R34AT013077) from the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) under the CFDA 93.213 Research and Training in Complementary and Integrative Health program. The grant will fund a feasibility study to evaluate the acceptability and feasibility of combining psilocybin-assisted therapy with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for the treatment of major depressive disorder. The two-phase study will first refine and optimize a psilocybin-assisted CBT intervention through an open trial, then test the feasibility, acceptability, and adherence to the intervention in a randomized trial comparing it to standard psilocybin-assisted therapy. Key outcomes will include recruitment, retention, patient/therapist acceptability, and treatment adherence measures. This work aims to develop a manualized, evidence-based psilocybin-assisted therapy that can be further studied and disseminated to clinicians.
