The University of Vermont & State Agricultural College (UVM) received a $381,000 Project Grant award from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837). The award, effective August 20, 2024 through May 31, 2026, supports the continued clinical development of a novel pleural and tracheal sealant. Specifically, the funding will be used to define optimal sterilization, preservation, and storage conditions for the sealant, further evaluate its safety and efficacy in animal models of pleural injuries, and initiate engagement with the FDA for initial clinical investigations. This work is being conducted in collaboration with industry partner Akina Inc. and accelerator partner Cellink LLC. The developed sealant system is intended to address the significant morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs associated with air leaks from the lung, which can result from a range of lung diseases, critical illnesses, and traumatic injuries.
