Project Grant R25AP00433
- This federal Project Grant award, funded by the U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Reclamation under the SECURE Water Act - Research Agreements (CFDA 15.560) program, will support research to determine how individual floodplain restoration projects in the Columbia River Basin can mitigate the impacts of climate change-induced reductions in summer low flows. The $225,658 award to the Regents of the University of Idaho will focus on optimizing project design parameters to maximize the...
- This $619,990 federal Project Grant award from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the Assistance to State Water Resources Research Institutes program (CFDA 15.805) seeks to develop a comprehensive hydrologic modeling framework to enhance flood resilience and water resource management within the Willamette River Basin in Oregon. The project aims to leverage advanced technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning to integrate streamflow observations from the USGS Next...
- This $178,404 federal Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) aims to determine the role of groundwater in regulating streamflow response to hydrologic extremes across a gradient of groundwater storage. The project will integrate high-resolution field observations of stream discharge, source, and age with a process-based hydrologic model to simulate groundwater-surface water interactions under various future hydrologic conditions. Study...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) will quantify how groundwater modulates streamflow response to hydrologic extremes in mountainous regions, which are the primary water source for much of the western United States. The $347,592 project, awarded to the University of Utah from September 1, 2025 to August 31, 2028, will integrate high-resolution stream and groundwater observations with hydrologic models to improve understanding of...
- This Project Grant award for $172,951 from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) supports a collaborative research effort to quantify how groundwater modulates streamflow response to hydrologic extremes in mountainous regions of the Western United States. The project will integrate high-resolution stream and groundwater observations with hydrologic models to improve understanding of how stored groundwater impacts mountain streamflow generation and enhance streamflow...
- This $621,463 federal Project Grant award from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the Assistance to State Water Resources Research Institutes (CFDA 15.805) program aims to improve national-scale estimates of poorly constrained water budget components. The award to Oregon State University (OSU) will leverage precipitation stable isotope data and hydrologic models to diagnose biases in evaporation and transpiration fluxes within advanced operational models. The project will focus on four...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) Project Grant award of $305,824 to Oregon State University supports research to investigate how changes in land cover and climate are impacting water and carbon cycles in grasslands. The key activities include: Quantifying how woody encroachment alters soil water flow and groundwater dynamics in the Konza Prairie research site in Kansas. Measuring the impact of woody encroachment on carbon processes like respiration and...
- This $447,546 Cooperative Agreement awarded by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the USGS Research and Data Collection program (CFDA 15.808) will fund Oregon State University to build a 100-ft eddy covariance tower and establish an AmeriFlux network site to measure evapotranspiration and water fluxes in the Upper Klamath Basin of Oregon. The project aims to generate a comprehensive, publicly available dataset of water availability metrics to support water resources management and...
- The Bureau of Reclamation awarded a $4,013,207.73 WaterSMART (CFDA 15.507) grant to the Deschutes Land Trust to restore 124 acres of aquatic, floodplain, and upland habitat at the Ochoco Preserve in Crook County, Oregon. The project aims to create over 2 miles of new main baseflow stream channels, 1.5 miles of side channels, and over 11 acres of wetlands to support reintroduced Spring Chinook salmon and Summer steelhead populations. Additional planned restoration efforts include 37 acres of...
- This Project Grant awarded by the U.S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Reclamation under the Applied Science Grants program (CFDA 15.557) provides $393,724 to the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology to conduct a series of surveys in the San Acacia reach of the Middle Rio Grande. The objective is to measure the flux of drainage groundwater entering the surface-water system, partition the groundwater discharge into its different sources, and provide aquifer flux-boundary...
This Project Grant award, funded by the U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Reclamation under the SECURE Water Act - Research Agreements program (CFDA 15.560), will examine the influence of whole valley-floor restoration on late summer baseflows in Meadow Creek, Oregon. The $116,505 award, effective August 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026, will use two complementary approaches: Developing a surface flow model (HEC-RAS-2D) linked with a groundwater flow model (FLOPY) to simulate pre- and post-restoration water budget conditions and inform field monitoring well placement. Implementing a Before-After Control-Impact (BACI) design to compare reach-scale water budgets for the restored area, measuring changes in streamflow, soil moisture, vegetation water use, and groundwater storage before and after restoration. The project aims to provide definitive proof of the role of stage-0 restoration in augmenting late-summer stream discharges by closing the water budget and accounting for changes in groundwater storage and evapotranspiration losses. This research will be conducted by Oregon State University, a prominent public land-grant research institution with extensive federal grant and contract experience.
