The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) awarded a five-year, $752,568 Project Grant under the Environmental Health (CFDA 93.113) federal grant program to Research Triangle Institute (RTI International) to develop enhanced data standards and semantic descriptions to improve integration and interoperability across the "source to outcome" (S2O) continuum in environmental health research.

The project aims to expand existing data and metadata standards to better distinguish biomarker measurements from the biological events they represent, and to better link environmental exposures to upstream chemical sources and downstream adverse health outcomes. This will facilitate communication and modeling across diverse environmental health subdomains, ultimately supporting improved public health decision-making. The effort will engage data generators, computational modelers, public health experts, and standards developers to guide the standards enhancements. RTI International will also develop a functional workflow to test the impact of the standards improvements on human health outcome predictions. As part of the project, RTI has subcontracted with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to contribute specialized expertise.
