This Project Grant award from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279), totaling $1,278,253 over the period of July 1, 2024 to April 30, 2029, aims to establish a Patient Engagement Resource Center called "ARTEMIS" to advance patient-centered, integrated care models for individuals with polysubstance use disorders in rural areas. The key objectives are to: 1) Form a patient advisory committee to guide continuous engagement with individuals impacted by polysubstance use in rural communities; 2) Evaluate patient experiences and perceived barriers to care delivery in rural areas; and 3) Conduct pilot projects in partnership with the advisory committee to better understand patient experiences, intentions, and patterns of polysubstance use, as well as strategies for addressing social determinants of health and improving functional outcomes. This initiative leverages the University of Maryland, Baltimore's expertise in community engagement, addiction research, and mobile telemedicine services to create a national model for urban-rural academic-community partnerships that re-centers the patient experience in clinical research and treatment for polysubstance use disorders.
