SUNNYDELL IRRIGATION DISTRICT HEAD OF CANAL REDESIGN DESIGNING AND IMPROVED HEADGATE AND SPILLWAY STRUCTURE PROJECT ABSTRACTAWARD PURPOSE WE ARE LOCATED IN THE COLUMBIA PLATEAU, OR THE COLUMBIA INTERMONTANE REGION, IN SOUTHEAST IDAHO THE SUNNYDELL CANAL BEGAN OPERATING CIRCA 1910 TO PROVIDE WATER TO THE CITIZENS AND FARMS ALONG THE SOUTHWESTERN BORDER OF MADISON COUNTY IN IDAHO THE HEAD OF THE CANAL FEEDS DIRECTLY FROM THE SNAKE RIVER BY THE HEISE AREA THE CANAL ITSELF SHARES ONE BANK WITH THE SNAKE RIVER AND THE OTHER BANK IS THE BASE OF THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN FOOTHILLS AS SHOWN IN THE IMAGES BELOW THE CURRENT HEAD OF THE CANAL BEGINS JUST AFTER THE HEISE BRIDGE FOR THE NEXT 2 MILES OR SO, THE CANAL RUNS BETWEEN THE SNAKE RIVER AND THE BASE OF THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN FOOTHILLS THIS STRETCH IS PARTICULARLY DIFFICULT TO MAINTAIN BECAUSE OF ITS LOCATION NOT ONLY IS IT DIFFICULT TO PROPERLY MAINTAIN, BUT IT IS ALSO NOT VERY EFFICIENT IT TAKES ABOUT 2 HOURS TO REGULATE THE WATER LEVELS FROM THE CURRENT HEAD TO THE FIRST DIVERSION POINT A GREAT DEAL OF WATER IS LOST AS IT TRAVELS DOWN THESE 2 MILES OF CANAL SIMPLY BECAUSE THIS SECTION IS IN POOR REPAIR AS WE HAVE WORKED WITH OUR BOR OFFICIALS, WE HAVE CONSIDERED SEVERAL WAYS TO IMPROVE OUR CANAL INSTEAD OF DUMPING A BUNCH OF MONEY INTO THE EXISTING HEAD STRUCTURE AND BEGINNING SECTION OF THE CANAL, WE WOULD INSTEAD LIKE TO INSTALL A NEW HEADGATE AND SPILLWAY APPROXIMATELY 2 MILES DOWNSTREAM THE PROPOSED LOCATION IS MUCH MORE ACCESSIBLE FOR CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE PURPOSES ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED THE RECIPIENT WILL HIRE AN ENGINEERING FIRM TO CONDUCT A SURVEY AND ENGINEERING DESIGNS OPTIONS TO IMPROVE, REMODEL, AND OR RELOCATION THE HEADGATE CONTROL STRUCTURE SPILLWAY FOR THE IRRIGATION DISTRICT THE FIRST STEP ENGINEERING AND SURVEYING OF THE LOCATION, THEN DEVELOP A FINAL DESIGN PROPOSAL FOR THE BOARD TO APPROVE AND INSTALL IN A FUTURE DATE EXPECTED DELIVERABLES OR OUTCOMES THE NEW STRUCTURE WILL IMPROVE THE ABILITY TO CONTROL FLOW LEVELS AND CONSERVE WATER THIS WORK WILL BE CARRIED OUT STARTING UPON DATE OF AWARD, WITH A COMPLETION DATE OF JUNE 1, 2023 INTENDED BENEFICIARIES THIS PLANNING PROJECT SUPPORTS PLANNING FOR WATER MANAGERS TO PLAN, PRIORITIZE, AND DESIGN PROJECTS THAT CONSERVE AND USE WATER MORE EFFICIENTLY MITIGATE CONFLICT RISK IN AREAS AT A HIGH RISK OF FUTURE WATER CONFLICT AND ACCOMPLISH OTHER BENEFITS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO SUSTAINABILITY IN THE WESTERN UNITED STATES SUBRECIPIENT ACTIVITIES IF KNOWN OR SPECIFIED AT TIME OF AWARD N A
