The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, part of the Department of Health and Human Services, awarded Oregon Health & Science University $429,000 on August 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853). The award funds research into the molecular pathways driving neurodegeneration, specifically examining how roundabout (ROBO) receptors regulate axon degeneration following nervous system injury. Prior work identified the SARM1 pathway as a key regulator of axon degeneration and characterized NAD+ depletion in axons as a trigger for SARM1-dependent neuronal damage. Using forward genetic screening in Drosophila, the investigator identified ROBO2 and ROBO3 as suppressors of axon degeneration and cell death following NAD+ depletion. This project will advance understanding of ROBO receptor mechanisms in neurodegeneration with the goal of identifying therapeutic targets to block axon and synapse loss in patients. The work is performed in Portland, Oregon. The period of performance runs from August 1, 2026, through July 31, 2028. This is a Project Grant, an assistance type supporting investigator-initiated extramural research conducted through peer review.
