The University of Pittsburgh received a $238,500 Project Grant from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders (CFDA 93.853) federal grant program. This two-year award, with a start date of December 6, 2024, will support research to evaluate the use of epidural spinal cord stimulation (SCS) to restore bladder control in cats with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI). The project has two aims: 1) use closed-loop SCS to evoke both micturition and continence in cats with chronic SCI, and 2) investigate an early intervention strategy to prevent maladaptive changes in neural bladder control after SCI by delivering long-duration SCS. The data generated from this project is expected to help advance the development of SCS as a potential treatment to improve bladder function for people living with SCI.
